Tim Tebow: Is Tim Terrific the Best Halfback at the Quarterback Position?

T.J. McaloonDec 12, 2011

To sum up Tim Tebow as a quarterback, you can only use one word: confusing.

Tebow has done a phenomenal job at turning this Broncos season around. He’s 7-1, has the Broncos on a six-game winning streak and has them on the verge on winning the AFC West Division.

Tebow is one heck of a football player. He is never down, never negative towards his team and will never quit during a game. These are all great tangibles to have as an NFL player and as a quarterback.

However, it does not make him someone you can trust with your team against a well-rounded opposing defense.

For all of Tebow’s supporters, he has his detractors.

After the Chicago Bears lost to another Tebow fourth-quarter comeback, Brian Urlacher said, “He’s a good running back, man. He runs the ball well.”

Against the Bears, Tebow had his highest number of passing attempts this year. So, the quote from Urlacher is a bit of a head-scratcher. His 40 passing attempts were one more than his 39 in a loss to Detroit.

Tebow struggled against Chicago in the first three quarters. He completed only three of his first 16 passes for only 45 passing yards. For any other quarterback in the NFL, he would have been replaced. Right there, his detractors will say that he is more of a running back. For any other quarterback, those stats are awful.

He rebounded in the fourth quarter, going 15-of-20 for 163 yards and a touchdown. Then, in overtime, he completed three of his four passes for 28 yards, leading the Broncos to a game-winning field goal.

His supporters will point to another fourth-quarter comeback performance and say that he comes through when the game matters the most.

Tebow will continue to play okay in the first quarter, then struggle in the second and third quarters, only to dominate in the fourth. His stats this year prove that is exactly what he does.

In the first quarter, Tebow is 14-of-29. The second and third quarter, Tebow is 14-of-42 and 15-of-40. When it comes to the fourth quarter, he’s 49 of 80.

Is that the stat line of someone that’s a running back more than a quarterback? Or is that the stat line of someone that relies on a great defense to keep his offense in games late?

Regardless of what we think of Tebow as a quarterback, it has proven to work for Denver. They will continue to use this method as it carries them to a AFC West Division Championship and a spot in this year's NFL playoffs.
