WWE News: The Slammy Awards and the 5 Most Meaningless Titles in Wrestling

Alfred KonuwaDec 11, 2011

The WWE Slammy Awards commence tomorrow as the WWE's annual celebration of indifference takes form.

For three hours, the WWE will hand out an endless line of awards until they run out of time, all while Michael Cole gets the term "Slammy" to trend Twitter into a server meltdown.

Pro wrestling is no stranger to meaningless relics of accomplishment, or lack thereof, as oftentimes a certain award or distinction is rendered useless.

Once upon a time, the standard for a wrestling company was to feature a major championship, a secondary championship, and a tag team championship.  The lack of abundance of championships added value to the few who were able to earn the right to wear them.

In today's national pro wrestling scene, however, there seem to be an over-abundance of awards and trophies in pro wrestling to the point of overkill.  With so many imaginary brass rings in professional wrestling, making sense of it all can serve as a documentation of irrelevant accolades.

5. The RAW General Manager

1 of 5

With so many figures of authority on RAW and in the WWE, from the board of directors to The Chief Operating Officer, to Vince McMahon, the RAW General Manager is pretty much useless.

Wrestlers are constantly making their own matches, so much so that when the RAW GM makes his presence felt, it often comes off as ancillary.

From some computer, to Vince McMahon, to Triple H, to John Laurinaitis, the high turnover has not exactly done wonders to the position of RAW GM.  With Laurinaitis' official title being an "interim" GM, there's no reason to believe that the revolving door of irrelevant figureheads will end.

4. The WWE Championship

2 of 5

The WWE Championship has been treated more like a hotel resort with different inhabitants checking in and out of the championship inn each month.

The lack of a dominant WWE Champion over the past few years has caused the WWE Championship's value to sink as it resembles more of a ratings title that is switched as a panic move in response to slumping viewership.

With the looming feud of the Rock and John Cena seemingly not being contested for the WWE Championship, the WWE will really take it in the shorts during post-WrestleMania Armageddon 2012 when the Rock is long gone and the WWE is left with what would be a lackluster title which they had to promote.

3. The WWE Divas Championship

3 of 5

There's no question that the WWE Divas work hard, but they are featured on such a limited basis and in so many "come-down" spots that their championship, once held by the predominantly abysmal Kelly Kelly for multiple months, has taken a hit as a result.

The divas division also suffers from a lack of depth in terms of talent.  After Beth Phoenix, the field quickly starts to thin out as far as star power and talent are concerned.

There is also a very ambiguous pecking order in the WWE Divas division, as the WWE has rotated different divas in the top spot in recent years, with Maryse, Alicia Fox, Eve, Kelly Kelly, and now Beth Phoenix all beneficiaries (used loosely) of what seems to be a slow-moving hot potato in the divas division.

2. The WWE Slammy Awards

4 of 5

The WWE Slammy Awards were once a relatively intriguing distinction made most famous by the late Owen Hart, a two-time Slammy Award winner in his own right.

Now, like WWE Championships, there are so many different and alternating Slammy Award categories that more can be said about those who don't have Slammy Awards than those who do.

There has actually been a Slammy Award given out for most menacing haircut.  To quote Zack Ryder, "are you serious, bro?"

1. The TNA Television Championship

5 of 5

TNA is not exempt from showcasing a parade of meaningless titles, and the Television Title is perhaps the most meaningless of them all.

Despite being an aesthetically pleasing belt, the Television Championship has been rendered into a Comedy Title as Eric Young has used it as a prop much like Carrot Top uses his props for comedy.

The Television Title started out as the Legends Championship, then it became the Global Championship, now it's called the Television Championship.  Before long, TNA should just call a spade a spade and name it the "So What?" belt.
