Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson: Loss Will Fuel King Khan to Greater Heights
Amir "King" Khan will be back and badder than ever following Saturday's upset loss to Lamont Peterson.
Upset Loss
Khan dominated early. He recorded a knockdown in the first round and owned the first three rounds. Then Peterson began to find his method of attack.
Lamont began assaulting the body of Khan and was the far superior fighter in close range. Peterson stayed on the attack from that point on. This led to Khan pushing off the challenger time and time again.
Khan was docked two points for pushing and that was ultimately the difference in the outcome.
Overconfidence
Khan was overconfident for this fight, which led to him being completely unprepared for the style of fighter he was about to face.
As Robert Klemko of the USA Today reported, Khan admitted "he'd only seen a few rounds of Lamont Peterson in action."
Khan was not ready to face the straightforward pressure of Peterson. Here he is, as quoted by Klemko, following the fight:
"He kept trying to pick me up and he was wild. He kept coming in with his head lower and lower each time. I had to push him away because I was trying to stay away from his head.
"
Amir was not happy with with Peterson's low head approach, but that is simply from frustration born out of his inability to beat it. Had he been more prepared to fight inside, a tweet like this would have been irrelevant.
Khan got off to a quick start, and that only fueled his over confidence. He lost his edge as the fight went on and he couldn't regain it, as he was not prepared to defeat the type of attack that he was facing.
He should be ashamed that he let himself get taken this off guard by an opponents' style.
Impending Wrath of Khan
This fight is going to be a valuable lesson for Khan. This is just the second loss for the 25-year-old, and his first since 2008.
Amir will use this loss to refocus his tremendous talents. He did not lose this fight because he has slowed or was less talented than his opponent. He lost this fight because he was less prepared.
It can be valuable step in a champions' progression to learn that he is not invulnerable.
This is still the most talented welterweight around and he is at the peak of his abilities. This narrow loss is merely a wake-up call, and his next opponents will merely be victims as a more focused Khan comes out to assert his dominance.
