Tim Tebow: Broncos QB's Legend Never Should Have Had Chance to Grow

Tim KeeneyDec 11, 2011

"Those guys make me look a lot better than I really am."

Hey, Tim Tebow said it, so you can't get mad at me. If you haven't heard—and I'm sure you have—Tim Tebow led yet another comeback today as the Broncos beat the Bears 13-10 in overtime.

And the legend continues.

But, in all honesty, should Tebow ever have had the chance?

Again, in all honesty, no, he shouldn't have.

The Bears led by three points with just two minutes to go, and the Broncos had zero timeouts. Chicago could have run the ball three straight times and given the Broncos possession with practically no time on the clock.

I'm not going to say Tim Tebow couldn't throw a game-winning 80-yard Hail Mary, but the chances wouldn't be high.

Yet, for some odd reason, Marion Barber thought it would be a good idea (or a funny idea? I don't know) to run out of bounds.

After that, the Broncos defense, which continues to not get enough credit, stopped the Bears on third down and forced a punt with about a minute left.

The rest, of course, is history.

Tebow drove the Broncos down the field with the help of some good plays by Eric Decker and some bad defense by Tim Jennings.

Matt Prater came on and coolly hit a 59-yard field goal to force the game into overtime.

Unfortunately for Tebow, he wasn't able to determine the outcome of the coin-flip, and Chicago started out with the ball. They were driving down the field with ease when Barber came through yet again.

For Denver.

He had a huge hole and looked to be headed for the end zone when he fumbled it over to the Broncos.

Denver's defense came up big yet again.

Tebow drove down the field with a couple of nice throws, and Matt Prater came through again with a game-winning 51-yard field goal.

But of course.

It's not Marion Barber who lost this game.

It's not Denver's defense that came up huge late in the game and kept a struggling Tebow within striking distance.

It's not even Prater, who hit two huge field goals from a combined 110 yards away.

It's Tebow, who made a couple of nice throws and was put in the right situation, who comes away looking like the hero.

Don't get me wrong. This is a fantastic Denver team. I am a believer in the current streak they are on, but I am a believer because of their defense.

But, by no means should Tim Tebow get credit for this comeback win.

Heck, even he recognizes that.

Yet still, the legend continues to grow.
