UFC 140 Results: 4 Improvements We Need to See from Frank Mir

Matt SaccaroDec 11, 2011

Frank Mir pulled out an amazing victory against Rodrigo Nogueira, but that doesn't mean he can't improve on his overall game.

So what exactly can Mir improve?

His game has come a long way since he started in the UFC, so there's not a whole lot, but there are a few areas that need work. Read and find out what they are!

Striking Defense

1 of 4

Frank Mir was tagged repeatedly by "Big Nog" throughout their fight, and was almost the recipient of a TKO defeat.

One area that Mir needs to work on if he is to be successful against strikers like Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos is his striking defense; he can't eat so many punches.

Head Movement

2 of 4

Frank Mir's head was always in the same place against Nogueria. If Mir is to avoid a a (T)KO in the future, he'll have to break that habit and work on his head movement.

Any heavyweight is powerful enough to knock someone out, so it'd be a great thing to work on—no matter who Mir has to fight.

Hand Speed

3 of 4

Nogueria was continuously beating Mir to the punch until Mir was nearly unconscious.

While Mir's striking has come a long way since he started, if he could make his punches a little bit faster it wouldn't hurt (well...it would hurt his opponents, but not Mir).

Conditioning

4 of 4

Heavyweights are (in)famous for their limited cardiovascular conditioning.

Mir certainly didn't gas out against Nogueira, but conditioning is something all heavyweights (with perhaps the exception of former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez) should work on to get a leg up on the rest of the division.
