UFC 140 Results: Where Big Nog Went Wrong

Jordy McElroyDec 11, 2011

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira left UFC 140 on Saturday night with a broken arm and another loss to Frank Mir.

Thousands of grotesque faces looked on in horror as Mir wrenched the former Pride heavyweight champion's arm in a complete circle with a kimura.

Nogueira eventually tapped from the hold, but it was too late. Mir cranked the hold all the way through, breaking the legendary heavyweight's arm and forcing the ref to step in at 3:38 of the first round.

Early out, Nogueira appeared to be the more efficient striker. He picked Mir apart in the stand-up exchanges before landing a hard right hand that had the former UFC champion scrambling for his senses.

As Nogueira attempted to finish on the ground, Mir was able to move around enough to avoid further damage and regain his composure.

Nogueira's undoing came in the grappling transitions when he controlled the wrong leg while attempting to perform a switch, a term used for a reversal maneuver in wrestling.

By attempting to control Mir's outside leg, Nogueira left his arm in a vulnerable position. Mir was able to move up, base out and secure Nogueira's arm for a kimura attempt. Nogueira had back control, but he couldn't control Mir's posture without both hooks in.

When attempting a switch, Nogueira should've controlled the nearest leg. This would've kept the entire movement tight and made it impossible for Mir to lock up a kimura.

When it comes to such high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, all it takes is one mistake to get caught in a submission or suffer a broken limb.

Mir was able to weather the storm and capitalize on the tiniest Nogueira mistake to get the win.

Nogueira will continue to get better as he improves his wrestling. Younger athletes can learn a lesson through the fact that even grizzled veterans make mistakes.

After the fight, Mir couldn't have explained the outcome any more perfectly.

"When you're our size, and you're as dangerous as we are, things happen. You can get caught. It takes nothing away from Nogueira," Mir said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.
