UFC 140 Highlights: Future Not Bright for Mitch Clarke After Boring Effort
The Canadian fans did not get to see their native son Mitch Clarke win in the opening fight of UFC 140. Actually, Clarke was never close.
There's nothing wrong with losing a fight. From time to time, it's going to happen. The problem for Clarke is that he hardly ever seemed interested in his fight against John Cholish. That's a very serious problem that needs to be fixed immediately.
This fight was in Clarke's home country—the crowd was clearly on his side. Yet, from the opening bell, Cholich was the more aggressive fighter. In and of itself, that's problematic.
Even worse is that as the fight progressed, Clarke was the one who was running out of gas. Logically, the more aggressive fighter should be the one that starts to tire out as the fight goes on. That just didn't happen.
When Clarke finally made an aggressive move to try to gain the upper hand, he was out of gas. Cholich made a fantastic counter and eventually got Clarke into a defenseless position.
Again, losing a fight isn't particularly problematic. But generally speaking, you want to have a reason for it. Maybe the other fighter just came out like a madman and dominated the action.
That didn't happen. Cholish simply took advantage of what Clarke was giving him.
If it's not a dominant fighter that beats you, you would hope that you spent some time on top. That way, when you look at the tape, you can find something positive to build off of.
Clarke didn't get that. Clarke literally has two seconds of this fight to look back on as something he did well.
That doesn't exactly suggest a terrible bright future in the sport.
