Amir Khan: Young Star's Best Shot at Glory Means Future Bout with Pacman

Jeff ChaseDec 10, 2011

If Amir Khan defeats Lamont Peterson in their title bout tonight, Khan should be focused on his next step in the boxing world. That would be to challenge the WBO Welterweight title holder Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao. There is one problem, though.

Both men share the same trainer in Freddie Roach.

Pacquiao is looking to get in one last fight before retiring, and many believe that will be the highly anticipated fight with Floyd Mayweather. The problem is, there is a better chance of someone winning a bet in Vegas that this fight won't happen in comparison to actually picking the winner.

If Khan wants to take that next step, he is going to have to make sacrifices, and the biggest one would be moving on with his trainer because Roach likely will not leave Pacquiao's side.

With a victory over Peterson tonight, this would seem like a huge risk for Khan to take. In order to move further among the boxing ranks, a move like this will be essential in putting the young star's name among the greatest.

Many will argue that Khan should just face Mayweather, but that could be a long shot. The boxing world has seen the situation between Pacquiao and Mayweather, and that could leave many to assume that Mayweather may not even be up for a shot against Khan.

Khan needs to take that step to win a title in the next weight class, so it will be interesting to see which route he takes. A fight with Mayweather will have no changes to his current situation, while a fight with Pacman will ensure an overhaul in his corner.
