Texas A&M: 10 Best Bowl Victories in School History
Despite what happened this season in one of the most disappointing years for Texas A&M ever, the Aggies have had success in the past. They may not have won a bowl since 2001, but over the years, Texas A&M was quite a power in the postseason.
As Ryan Tannehill leads the Mike Sherman-less Aggies into the Texas Bowl against Northwestern, we take a glance back at 10 bowl wins for A&M that have influenced the university's direction in the sport.
With the earliest bowl win on this list going all the way back to 1939, you'll notice that the victories are quite spread out. Success over the years on the gridiron has been important to the Aggies and each of these bowl wins exemplify that fact.
Here are A&M's all-time best bowl wins since the Aggies first started playing college football.
1981 Independence Bowl
1 of 10Back in 1981, Texas A&M defeated Oklahoma State before the Cowboys and Aggies were conference mates. Back then, A&M was a member of the Southwest Conference while OSU played in the Big Eight.
The Aggies won easily by a score of 33-16.
1985 Cotton Bowl Classic
2 of 10In the mid-'80s, the Aggies took on SEC foe Auburn in the Cotton Bowl. The Tigers will coincidentally become division rivals now that A&M has joined the SEC. As Auburn visited Dallas with high hopes, they left quite depressed.
Texas crushed them by 20 points, 36-16.
1950 Presidential Cup Bowl
3 of 10The Presidential Cup Bowl only occurred one time ever back in 1950. Texas A&M played Georgia up at Maryland's stadium in a great SEC-Southwest Conference clash. The Bulldogs and Aggies would go on to meet many more times in bowls over the years.
A&M won this one-year bowl, however, 40-20.
1987 Cotton Bowl Classic
4 of 10Texas A&M has played Notre Dame three times over the years in the postseason, all in the Cotton Bowl. The Aggies only won once, however, back in the late '80s. The Irish and A&M's first meeting in the bowl season was taken by the Aggies easily.
A&M won by 25, 35-10.
1990 Holiday Bowl
5 of 10The Aggies visited San Diego back in 1990 to take on the BYU Cougars. In their largest bowl victory margin ever, Texas A&M scored over 60 points.
A big-time win, A&M wins 65-14.
1976 Sun Bowl
6 of 10The Florida Gators traveled to take on Texas A&M over in the Sun Bowl. The Aggies exploded in a huge victory over the SEC, crushing Florida by 23 points.
Another big Aggie bowl win, 37-14 over the Gators.
2001 GalleryFurniture.com Bowl
7 of 10In Texas A&M's most recent bowl win back in 2001, the Aggies defeated TCU in a easy victory. It may not be a big bowl because it's not even around anymore, but just the fact that it's A&M's most recent win makes it important.
The Aggies take an easy one, 28-9.
1995 Alamo Bowl
8 of 10Back in the mid-'90s, Michigan traveled down to San Antonio to face off against Texas A&M. In one of the closest bowl victories every for the Aggies, Michigan was unable to make the comeback before time expired.
The Aggies took home the win, 22-20.
1967 Cotton Bowl Classic
9 of 10In the Aggies' first bowl in over 10 years, A&M took on Alabama in the Cotton Bowl. With Bear Bryant heading up the Tide, the Aggies were able to secure revenge for him leaving them years earlier.
In the 25th Cotton Bowl ever, Texas A&M defeated 'Bama 20-16.
1939 Sugar Bowl
10 of 10In Texas A&M's only national championship ever, the Aggies were able to take home the title over Tulane. Also one of A&M's closest bowls, the one-point win in just their second bowl ever is still cherished to this day.
Residing on the wall of Kyle Field, the Aggies' 1939 national championship over Tulane came in a 14-13 victory.
