Knicks Rumors: Chauncey Billups Threat to Retire Nothing But Posturing
With the New York Knicks recent signing of center Tyson Chandler, it meant that point guard Chauncey Billups' short tenure in New York is coming to a quick end.
To make room for Chandler's salary, the Knicks are planning on using their amnesty clause on Billups' contract, shedding his remaining $14.2 from their payroll.
By doing so, Billups will end up on the waiver wire where teams currently under the salary cap will have the first opportunity at signing him.
The 35-year old Billups has countered that with the threat of retirement. He currently has left Knicks camp and returned to his home in Denver.
While it could possibly make sense for Billups to retire considering the fact that he's had a great career and already won a ring, don't count on it.
It's just a whole lot of posturing on behalf of Billups in order not to end up on a bad team.
If you recall, Billups was perfectly happy in Denver and wasn't happy about being dealt to New York in the first place. Billups is a true professional, but having this happen twice in a short period of time can be frustrating, especially for a guy who would be content playing out the last couple of season's of his career in his hometown.
Don't buy the retirement talk though. He simply doesn't want to get picked up by a bad team at this point in his career. Believe me, if a team with a shot at getting Billups another ring comes calling than his tune will change dramatically.
Right now he's just really frustrated and his emotions are bound to come out, but Billups has a lot left to offer a team.
He just wants to make sure that it's the right team.
