Dana White's Most Outrageous Quotes from 2011
UFC supremo Dana White could be called anything but self-effacing; if anything his penchant for shooting from the hip has landed him in hot water on more than one occasion.
One minute he comes across as the eloquent CEO of a going concern, the next he’s on an F-bomb tirade ranging from the asinine to the downright “no he didn’t just say that” shock look as he holds court with the world's media.
As things stand, White is the Chael Sonnen of the business world—they’re both adept at selling a product; hard sell no doubt.
Their need, however, to go beyond, what sometimes is socially unacceptable is why these master rhetoricians of MMA’s showbiz world are both loathed and loved in equal measure.
Still, let’s take a look at some of Uncle Dana’s most outrageous quotes of 2011.
Uncle Dana on Fedor Emelianenko Fighting Dan Henderson
1 of 7“If I've got to still give Fedor his digs, my dig would be, 'Dude, you're fighting a 185-pounder.' Henderson's got a great chin, he's durable, he's got good wrestling, he can stay out of submissions, and all the great things I can say about Henderson, but Henderson weighs 185 pounds.
"So I actually think this fight, as far as Fedor is concerned, it's a lose-lose for him. If he knocks out Dan Henderson, he knocks out a 185-pounder. If he gets knocked out, he just got knocked out by a 185-pounder.”
Dana White’s ire for Fedor knows no bounds—no matter what Fedor does, in the eyes of White, he’s either failed or is a failure.
White made this sarcastic remark prior to “The Emperor’s” slated match with “Hendo” at Strikeforce/M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Henderson.
Uncle Dana on Boxing vs. MMA
2 of 7“MMA is the kind of sport that once you start watching it, it's hard to go back to boxing. I'm going to take heat for that one.”
At the UFC 134 press junket to promote the upcoming fight between Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami, Uncle Dana let rip with this quote.
I would go so far as to say that White at the time must’ve been suffering from a severe dose of the disease foot and mouth.
Both are contact sports, the difference being that boxing has been around for the ages; his comparisons I’m sure didn’t go down too well with the boxing faithful.
Uncle Dana on Fedor Emelianenko’s Losses in Strikeforce
3 of 7“Michael Jordan of MMA!? Dumbest thing ever said!!! So stupid”
White is a man who likes getting what he wants and when he doesn’t, he throws the toys out of his pram like a spoilt little brat.
That’s exactly what has transpired in the case of Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko—ever since he tried and failed in his quest to sign the once baddest dude on the planet to the UFC fold, White has thrown a hissy fit, and everything else bar the kitchen sink, at the Russian mixed martial artist.
And to make matters worse for Fedor, his foray into Strikeforce fueled White’s fire even more.
Fedor went on a three-fight losing streak (Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva and Dan Henderson) before being unceremoniously bounced by White and Co., who at the time had recently acquired Strikeforce.
When comparisons were made between Fedor and Michael Jordan, those were White’s parting words.
Uncle Dana on Larry Merchant
4 of 7"I actually thought that that was very embarrassing for HBO," the UFC president said. "The guy is senile, he's out of his mind. He's up there berating Floyd, but Floyd can't say anything back to you?
"You've been disrespecting guys your whole career, and guess what, you can go back 60 years, you're not kicking Floyd's ass, okay? Give me a break. And what's Floyd going to do? A 102-year-old guy just said that to him."
I think that’s kind of rich coming from a guy whose second vocation is insulting anyone who dares challenge his authority.
I mean, Uncle Dana has a long list of people he’s disrespected since he’s become the face of the UFC.
The idiom "pot calling the kettle black" springs to mind
Needless to say, I wonder what his reaction would be if Nick Diaz, Rashad Evans or even someone like Jon Jones was all up in his grill giving him a piece of their mind, what then?
Uncle Dana on Jason “Mayhem” Miller
5 of 7“It was bad. To be honest, believe me, my Twitter has been blowing up with all the Mayhem fans blasting me, but facts are facts. It was the worst standup I've ever seen in my life. I don't know if I've ever seen worse standup.
"The guy's been in the business for over 10 years. It looked like it was his first fight ever. It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen.”
After Mayhem Miller's dismal display against Michael “The Count” Bisping at TUF 14 Finale, the UFC kingpin couldn’t hold his tongue, hence this spiteful and acidic remark.
It’s also safe to say that Mr. White has never contested in the Octagon or anywhere else for that matter, otherwise he’d be privy to what it actually entails to be a fighter.
I guess it’s just another day in the life of Dana—disrespecting his fighters is just par for the course.
Uncle Dana on the Fans
6 of 7"This fight was not part of the (FOX) deal. The deal is for seven years (and) so many fights on FOX. This time, that time, this was never part of the deal. After we signed the deal, FOX said, 'Why don't we do this, why don't we do a fight right away, lets put a great fight on TV, kick it off and let everybody know about the partnership?' That's what this thing was.
"For anybody to bitch about this fight and they didn't get to see that fight, shut up! You should have bought tickets then if you wanted to see all the fights and you don't like to watch it on Facebook. Seriously, shut up. I don't even want to hear it."
What White actually meant to say was, how dare these mere mortals question me?
White took umbrage to the fact that the fans and media alike thought it a bad idea to feature just the one fight on Fox television—Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos.
Well spoken by the lead spokesman of company that’s doing its best to go mainstream whilst picking up a few fans here and there.
Honestly! The man has got some serious front addressing the same fans that put the bread and butter on his table in the manner that he did and does.
Uncle Dana on Jon Fitch’s Title Aspirations
7 of 7“Fitch is one of these guys that goes, 'Oh, I want my respect,'" White said. "He just fought a 155-pound guy and went to a draw with him, and in my opinion, he lost the first two rounds—and he's crying for a title shot?”
According to White, Fitch had in essence fought a lightweight in B.J. Penn when they threw down at UFC 127.
It must’ve escaped him that Penn had actually fought closer to light heavyweight before, to be exact 191 pounds.
Also, his opponent was more or less a heavyweight at the time of the match.
I’ll jog his memory—initials L.M.
If that doesn’t suffice, how about a beast that breathes fire?
Still, Fitch has only himself to blame—laying and praying will not get you a second shot at UFC glory, no matter how good your record is.
The fans know it and so does Mr. White, hence his reason for complaining to you.
