WWE: Top 5 CM Punk Promos Since December 2010

Shalaj LawaniaDec 8, 2011

We all love CM Punk for trying to bring back the essence of professional wrestling in a scripted show; trying to bring back some lost prestige (and lost viewers) to the WWE. He's given us some of the best promos in many years ever since he left commentary in December 2010, which is why this slide deals with that specific time span.

I believe WWE failed to capitalize on most of them, if not all. You are free to contradict me of course, but do watch the videos and read why I think so first.

Here are the videos and thoughts on the wrestler with the microphone skills in WWE.

5. Feud with John Cena in December 2010

1 of 5

Believe it or not, there was a time when CM Punk was vilified and hated. This video was during that time.

I always respected Punk for being a credible heel but found his SES angle very annoying. His short stint in commentary brought out the smart heel persona that he went on to portray in this video.

His forgettable feud with John Cena started strongly but ended tamely, a blunder not uncommon to the WWE Creative. We did have an element of humour in the beginning when CM Punk used to blast John Cena on commentary for spilling his diet soda, but he set up a the rock-solid foundation of a good feud with this promo.

He basically said what the men above 18 wanted to hear all along—Cena's character was getting really goofy and stale. He brought up the whole John Cena firing, the crux of the hype at Survivor Series 2010 (which didn't even last a day despite Cena's sentimental speech) and how Cena was just like any other heel with his name-calling and cheap shots (dropping chairs on Wade Barrett).

This wasn't his best promo, but it was a pretty entertaining segment overall. He was a heel then, and lived out his role in a perfect manner.

The annoying part was that this feud just died.

The WWE Creative woke up suddenly by January and realized that WrestleMania was just a couple of months away and Super Cena needed to be in the main event so he could show off his new shirt and win the championship (which he didn't fortunately), and was immediately shifted off to feuding with Miz and Punk was given Randy Orton. Way to blow it.

4. CM Punk Meets Kevin Nash

2 of 5

After a controversial Summer Slam, Kevin Nash came out to answer the nagging question in everyone's mind over his involvement in the main event. He gave a horrible segment, which can be blamed on his decaying mic skills and made me feel that they used the wrong guy for meddling in this feud. (Brodus Clay, anyone?).

Out came CM Punk who literally owned Kevin Nash.

There was a bucketload of sarcasm and taunts in his lines, and that really made it an awesome promo. Maybe it's the stark contrast between Nash's aging skills and Punk's talent that really made it Punk's promo for the ages.

By the way, the text message was comic gold.

This whole thing was building up towards a Punk-Nash feud which I'm not sure would have turned out great, but it was scrapped too. I mean, give us an ending at least, be it a final chair shot to the head or a Jackknife Powerbomb. All we got was a few good promos, and then they realized that Nash was in no state to wrestle so they abruptly started a new feud with Triple H so they could dish out some more promos. CM Punk forgot about the whole thing and started teaming with his own Night Of Champions opponent. Where's the logic?

And the whole story that someone didn't want Punk to be champion just fizzled out.

3. CM Punk-Triple H Confrontation

3 of 5

The top three are the best promos in 2011 in my opinion, beating all those video/rap games by Cena-Rock or any of Alberto Del Rio's awesome Destiny segments (sarcasm).

The reason this promo stood out, apart from the fact that there were two of the best mic-workers in WWE in this segment, was because CM Punk spewed out some of his annoyance over the way the company works and how those who buttered Vince McMahon made it big with the audience and how it had, and I quote, "always been the Law of the Jungle where the strong survive!"

All HHH said was: "You need to get the crowd behind you, Punk!" while the crowd maniacally chants, "CM PUNK! CM PUNK! CM PUNK!"

Incredulous with the entire situation, all Punk could do was ask HHH whether he wasn't deaf and was actually listening to the crowd he was sucking up to.

Then he reminds HHH how WWE still hasn't brought back the ice cream bars which the crowd wanted. You were saying you listened to the Universe? Yeah, owned.

The thing is, with such solid points, we still had a pretty awesome promo because the man at the other end was Triple H. Only Triple H can pull off something like that, something that really constitutes a solid promo.

But CM Punk still stole this one (that's what the slides are about).

"...and right now this isn't CM Punk talking to Triple H. This is Phil Brooks talking to Paul Levesque!"

Golden.

2. CM Punk-Vince McMahon Confrontation

4 of 5

You hear Jerry Lawler say, "This is gonna be good!" at the beginning of this video, and boy was he right.

This segment was blunt, raw and harsh. That made it awesome.

Not many people have taken on Vince McMahon like that in years, and that's something we fans love to see. Fresh from a suspension and a heated shoot promo a few weeks before, CM Punk ranted off a year's worth of frustration over being suppressed just because he didn't like to suck up to Vinnie Mac. He was still being Punk by insulting superheroes like Rock and Cena and demanding his own jet and movie, but was still being cheered on by the crowd.

And then the crowd starts chanting, "WE WANT WRESTLING!" and Vince (in a vintage Vince McMahon moment) said, "I don't give a DAMN about what you think!" which sparked the whole CM Punk being the Voice of the Voiceless and citing that McMahon was making a mockery of professional wrestling.

Harsh, no?

Of course, Cena (again, in a vintage Cena moment) came out and spoiled the whole thing. No complaints about how this storyline played out though, it did give us one of the best PPVs of the year after all.

If there's one man who could have added the much-needed depth to this storyline, it was Vince McMahon. Imagine Punk blasting off John Laurinaitis.

1. CM Punk Shoot

5 of 5

The reason CM Punk is where he is today is because of this video. I have no clue whether this was genuine (which I think it was) rather than scripted, but it was simply amazing.

I'll let the video do the talking. He took some big names like Paul Heyman, Brock Lesnar, Hulk Hogan and Ring ff Honour—names they don't usually mention on television.

Look at CM Punk today—WWE champion, headling all PPVs and in for the long run—and then look at this video and you'll know why.

This sparked off the whole pipebomb series, and no one to date knows why he wore a Stone Cold shirt that night.

This was my list, I hope you enjoyed watching.
