Heisman Finalists: The High Point of Every Finalist's Heisman Campaign
In every Heisman hopeful’s season, there are moments that make fans just go “wow.” At one point or another, their superior athleticism and talent combine to make a play meriting an incessant amount of replays.
This has held true for this year’s finalists Montee Ball, Tyrann Mathieu, Trent Richardson, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.
Here’s a look back at the best moments from each of their seasons.
Montee Ball
1 of 5Montee Ball is not the flashiest guy around, but his performance against Michigan State to help Wisconsin in their comeback win was easily his best.
He rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns and added three receptions for seven yards and another touchdown. He also threw a pass for 32 yards.
He may not have won the Doak Walker Award but he has easily been the most valuable player for the Badgers with a season most people only dream of.
Tyrann Mathieu
2 of 5Unlike Ball, the Honey Badger is a massive collection of highlights.
He had six turnover recoveries on the year, returning two for touchdowns, forced six more, and was second in the nation in punt returns, returning two to the house.
Against Arkansas, a punt return was exactly what LSU needed after a slow start. The play completely changed the face and trajectory of the game and the Tigers never looked back, ultimately beating the Hogs 41-17.
Trent Richardson
3 of 5Trent Richardson has accumulated nearly 1,600 yards rushing this season, but these 76 yards against Ole Miss were far and away his most impressive.
He jukes out a defender in the backfield and then breaks two more tackles to break into open space. Then he showcases his speed and athleticism before making one of the most ridiculous moves I’ve ever seen.
He faked a juke backwards—leaving the Rebel defender on the ground—and took the ball the next 15 yards for a touchdown. Everything went right on this run.
Andrew Luck
4 of 5Luck may be a quarterback, but his shining moment came during a trick play as a wide receiver against UCLA.
He tossed the ball to his running back, who gave it to the receiver, who launched a ball way too far for any normal person to catch it.
But somehow Luck managed not only to make a one-handed catch—without wearing a glove—but he also had the presence of mind to get his foot down in bounds to complete the catch. Insane.
Robert Griffin III
5 of 5Griffin has had a video game-like season but his best moment came in the final seconds of Baylor’s game versus Oklahoma.
And to think the Bears were going to take a knee and let the clock run out, content with overtime.
He scrambled left and bought just enough time to launch a perfect ball 34 yards downfield to an open Terrance Williams.
The play secured Baylor’s improbable win against the Sooners and was easily the program’s best win ever. It was a great play to cap off an amazing performance.
