Dana White Is Confident Georges St-Pierre Will Return in Full Health
Much to the dismay of losing the company's biggest star in Georges St-Pierre, UFC President Dana White isn't losing any sleep over it.
In fact, the UFC boss, who addressed the status of St-Pierre's injury during UFC 140 press conference, is confident the UFC welterweight champion will make a successful return to the Octagon.
"He’s an athlete that’s taken very good care of himself through his entire career. He’s a guy that’ll put in the work and do the things that need to be done," White said. "I’m 100-percent confident that Georges St-Pierre will rebound from this injury and come back.”
Both St-Pierre and Diaz were originally slated to headline UFC 137 before St-Pierre sprained his ACL and was forced to withdraw. St-Pierre would then be scheduled to meet the former Strikeforce welterweight champion, Nick Diaz on Super Bowl weekend at UFC 143 until it was revealed he had torn his ACL and would be sidelined for ten months.
Diaz will now meet Carlos Condit in the main event for a UFC interim title bout.
When the UFC boss discussed the condition of St-Pierre's injury, he said that ACL injuries are common in sports and he only expects the champion to return in top physical condition.
“We’re going to make sure Georges gets the right surgery with the right guy, the right rehabilitation," he said.
With St-Pierre sidelined, this gives a chance for Diaz and Condit and the rest of the welterweight division to establish themselves as legitimate title contenders. As for previous contenders like Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves and BJ Penn, they will still compete and remain relevant while the rest of the division sorts itself out.
