Rampage Gets Revenge, Mir Completes Comeback and Rashad Reings

Jessy MorrisDec 27, 2008

Last night's UFC 92 event didn't disappoint, in fact, it delivered on all the hype it had generated. Three huge fights took place, much to the fans delight, as Rampage Jackson fought Wanderlei Silva, Mir and Nogueira battled for the interim heavyweight title and Forrest Griffin was defending the light-heavyweight belt against Rashad Evans.

Black men dominated last night as Brad Blackburn and Cheik Kongo won their fights earlier in the evening, but when Quinton Jackson came out for his fight against "The Axe Murderer", he looked serious and ready to kill Wanderlei... and kill he did.

Who would have thought that Rampage would KO Silva in round one? Still, both men exchanged blows and with only one minute left in the first round; Rampage landed a left hook that sent Silva on the ground. Silva was already down and out but Jackson delivered three more punches to an unconscious opponent. Revenge proved to be sweet for Quinton Jackson who was all smiles after the fight.

Considered to be the two best BJJ fighters in the heavyweight division, Frank Mir and Antonio "Minautoro" Nogueira battled for the UFC interim heavyweight belt. Like alot of fans had predicted, when you have two great ground fighters like these two, the fight just may end up staying on the feet the whole time and that's exactly what happened.

It was actually really clear that Nogueira wanted the fight to go to the ground while Frank Mir wanted to stay on his feet and strike, which seems to have thrown "Big Nog" off his game.

Frank Mir came out and showed the best striking skills he ever did in that fight. Mir trained really hard for the fight and it showed. Nogueira seemed really uncomfortable on his feet and my guess is, Nogueira didn't think Mir would want to stand. Frank Mir completely dominated the fight landing awesome combos and knocked Nog on his back several times.

Then in round 2, Nog fell for the last time as Mir went in for the kill and TKO'ed "Minautoro". At first I thought it might have been an early stoppage, but Nogueira had a hard time getting back up and the fight was rightfully stopped. I was screaming in my house about how happy I was Frank Mir won.

It was then time for the main event as Griffin and Evans were set to fight and what a fight it was. The two first rounds were dominated by the champ as Evans had problems dealing with Griffin's superior reach advantage but that was thrown out the window when Evans took the fight to the ground in the third.

Rashad Evans landed great punches from Griffin's guard and ended the fight. Evans became the new UFC light-heavyweight champion and Forrest Griffin kept the heart of a champion congratulating Rashad and his corner and keeping the smile.

So now, what will happen?

A fight rematch between Mir and Lesnar is inevitable now to unify the heavyweight titles and the way Mir dominated Nogueira, Lesnar's in for a long night.

Now that Rampage and Evans won their fights, will they fight for the title? Maybe Rampage will have to pass through Forrest Griffin in a rematch first. Or maybe, Griffin will fight the other loser Wanderlei Silva.

Let's not forget about Anderson Silva who could possibly fight one of those men in the future, but at this point who?

What do you think will happen after the events that transpired last night at UFC 92?
