MLB Trade Rumors: 10 Teams Chasing Gio Gonzalez with Buehrle/Wilson off Market

Rick WeinerDec 8, 2011

Well, that didn't take long.

In the span of 24 hours, the Miami Marlins and Anaheim Angels have spent roughly $135 million to acquire the services of free-agent starters Mark Buehrle and C.J. Wilson, respectively.

That leaves pitchers such as Roy Oswalt and Edwin Jackson as the cream atop the remaining free-agent field.

Teams that missed out on Buehrle and Wilson will likely turn their attention to acquiring a bona fide front-of-the-rotation starter via trade.

The name on everyone's mind is Gio Gonzalez, the 26-year-old lefty from the Oakland Athletics.

Lets see what teams might be able (and willing) to meet Billy Beane's high price tag.

Arizona Diamondbacks

1 of 10

Arizona has been talking to Oakland about both Gio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill, and the prices for both players are different.

To acquire Gonzalez, the A's are said to be insisting on Tyler Skaggs, a 20-year-old lefty starter, being included in a deal. Skaggs was one of the pieces the Diamondbacks received from the Anaheim Angels in return for Dan Haren back in 2010.

Skaggs is said to not be a mandatory part of a trade for Cahill.

The A's, like virtually every other team in baseball, are big fans of 2011 first-round pick Trevor Bauer, a righty starter who, like Skaggs, is only 20 years old. Bauer would likely have to be part of a package for either Oakland pitcher.

Cincinnati Reds

2 of 10

Cincinnati checked in with Oakland on Gio Gonzalez, and while there have been no reports as to what names may have been discussed, we can safely assume that Yonder Alonso was at the forefront of any discussions the teams had.

Alonso, who is blocked in Cincinnati at first base by former NL MVP Joey Votto, would lead a package that could also include prospects Billy Hamilton, Yasmani Grandal and Kyle Lotzkar.

Detroit Tigers

3 of 10

The Detroit Tigers checked in on Gio Gonzalez, and once they were told that their offer would have to start with Jacob Turner, they reportedly lost interest.

That being said, the Tigers have multiple prospects that could be of interest to the A's aside from Turner, including Nick Castellanos, Francisco Martinez, Chance Ruffin, Drew Smyly and Avisail Garcia.

Depending on what other teams do around them, the Tigers could begin to feel pressure to re-kindle talks with the A's about Gonzalez if they feel like they are falling behind the pack.

Kansas City Royals

4 of 10

Surprisingly active this offseason, the Kansas City Royals have spoken to the Oakland Athletics about Gio Gonzalez.

An unnamed scout believes that the Royals match up well as a potential trade partner with the A's, considering Kansas City's deep farm system.

Any package for Gonzalez would likely include both catching prospect Wil Myers and outfielder Lorenzo Cain.

Miami Marlins

5 of 10

Regardless of the fact that they signed Mark Buehrle earlier this week, the Miami Marlins are still looking to add pitching to their vastly improved team.

Gio Gonzalez is a target, and the Marlins have plenty of prospects that they could offer to the A's in return.

Logan Morrison had his issues with Marlins management this past season but has immense upside and is relatively cheap, comparatively speaking.

Morrison could be the centerpiece of any deal for Giio.

New York Yankees

6 of 10

As the 2011 trade deadline neared, the Yankees let it be known to Billy Beane that they were prepared to "pay big" to acquire Gio Gonzalez.

Beane refused to discuss dealing Gonzalez at that point, and the Yankees moved on.

Now that Gonzalez is on the market, would the Yankees still "pay big" to acquire him?

A deal would likely have to include Jesus Montero, Manny Banuelos and Gary Sanchez, among others.

While Brian Cashman has maintained his stance that he is not interested in trading his best prospects, we cannot forget that while George has passed, the Steinbrenners still control the Yankees, and you can never count them out of going over their GM's head to make a deal happen.

Philadelphia Phillies

7 of 10

The Phillies checked in on Gio Gonzalez, and while they likely are not a match with the A's, you cannot rule them out of the running completely.

Just ask the Yankees—Philadelphia seemingly came out of nowhere last year to sign Cliff Lee.

Some reports have the A's asking for Cole Hamels in return, but that makes little sense, as the A's are known to be looking for young talent that is under team control for the foreseeable future, not established stars.

Domonic Brown, the Phillies' über-outfield prospect who they have steadfastly refused to include in any trade, would likely be one of the centerpieces of a deal for Gonzalez.

Texas Rangers

8 of 10

Now that the ace of their 2011 staff, C.J. Wilson, is now a former Ranger, Texas is looking for pitching.

The Rangers had discussed reliever Andrew Bailey with the A's, but scoffed at the cost: left-handed starter Martin Perez, SS Leury Garcia and 3B Mike Olt.

However, could that package be the basis for landing Gonzalez?

The Rangers were rumored to be interested in Gio Gonzalez before C.J.Wilson signed with the Anaheim Angels.

Now that Wilson is gone, Rangers GM Jon Daniels may re-visit talks with the A's and find out just how much more expensive acquiring Gonzalez would be.

Perhaps substituting Jurickson Profar for Leury Garcia would be enough to get a deal done.

Toronto Blue Jays

9 of 10

Reportedly, the Blue Jays have spoken with the A's about Gonzalez, though how far the talks will go remains to be seen.

Toronto's minor league system is loaded with talent, and their very best prospects may actually be in the low levels of their minor league system.

Considering the A's have Jemile Weeks at 2B and not much else, names like d'Arnaud, McGuire and Goss would likely be of interest to Billy Beane.

Whether or not Toronto would be willing to deal off some of their best prospects to acquire Gonzalez (or anyone else) remains to be seen.

A key factor may be whether or not the Blue Jays are successful in landing Japanese phenom Yu Darvish, who many expect Toronto to make a big bid on.

Washington Nationals

10 of 10

After missing out on Mark Buehrle and CJ Wilson, the Nationals are moving onto "Plan B" according to GM Mike Rizzo, and that includes free agent Roy Oswalt and exploring trade options such as Gio Gonzalez.

We all know that Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper are off-limits, so whether or not the Nationals have enough in the minors to entice the A's remains to be seen.

As with some other teams who have reported interest in Gio, there have been no names linked to potential trade scenarios.

However, we can likely assume that prospects such as pitchers Brad Peacock and Sammy Solis, along with outfielder Eury Perez, are likely to be part of any deal for Gonzalez.
