Georgia Football Awards for the 2011 Season

Brian JonesDec 8, 2011

With the regular season over, awards will be given out, including the Heisman Trophy.

No Bulldog is in the running for the Heisman, but players such as Jarvis Jones, Aaron Murray, Cordy Glenn and Orson Charles were named to the All-SEC team.

So with everyone else giving out end-of-season awards to some of college football's best players, I thought it would be a good time to give out awards to some of the Bulldog players that had a stellar 2011 campaign.

So without further ado, here's my awards for the Bulldogs MVP, Offensive MVP, Defensive MVP, Most Improved Player and Freshman of the Year.

Freshman of the Year: Isaiah Crowell

1 of 6

Despite the injuries and off-the-field issues, Crowell did have a good season, racking up over 800 rushing yards and showing the fans glimpses of his ability to fly by defenders.

If Crowell can get a littler bigger and stay out of trouble, he will be a very dangerous SEC running back. Malcolm Mitchell also had a great freshman season for the Bulldogs, but Crowell got the award because he was the top freshman running back in the conference and he was the fourth-leading rusher in the SEC.

Most Improved Player: Bacarri Rambo

2 of 6

Rambo did have a good 2010 season, leading the team with 82 tackles and three interceptions.

But Rambo took it to another level in 2011, racking up seven interceptions, which leads the conference and puts him third in the country.

For his performance, Rambo was named first-team All-SEC by the AP.

If he comes back for his senior season, he should be a preseason All-American.

Offensive MVP: Aaron Murray

3 of 6

This should be no surprise because Murray was the Bulldogs best and most consistent offensive player. He leads the conference in touchdown passes (33) and ranks second in the conference in passing yards per game (220.1).

Had it not been for the great play of Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson, Murray would have been named first-team All-SEC. But with the season he's having, expect him to be a darkhorse for the next year's Heisman trophy.

Defensive MVP: Jarvis Jones

4 of 6

Like choosing Murray for Offensive MVP, Jones for Defensive MVP was simply a no-brainer. The first team All-SEC linebacker is first in the league and third in the country in sacks. He is also first in the SEC in tackles for losses.

Jones was named to the AFCA All-America team and is a finalist for the Butkus Award. If there was one player that made the most impact on the defensive side of the ball, it had to be Jones.

Bonus Award: The Hard Hat Award

5 of 6

The Hard Hat Award is for someone who goes out there and gives his all no matter the circumstances.

Inside linebacker Michael Gilliard was not the original starter, but had to step in early in the season due to injures to Alec Ogletree and Christian Robinson.

When Gillard made that transition from reserve to starter, he stepped up in a huge way. Gilliard leads the team in tackles with 65 and one forced fumble, a fumble recovery and one interception.

Jones and Rambo made bigger plays, but the workman-like effort of Gilliard was the reason the Bulldogs were one of the best defensive teams in the country.

Team MVP: Aaron Murray

6 of 6

Murray took that next step in his progression, and as a result, the Bulldogs won 10 games for the first time since 2008.

Murray had his share of mistakes, but always found ways to help the Bulldogs win.

He has already broke some passing records this year, and if he continues to grow and improve, he could be the most prolific passer in Bulldogs history.

I'm sure Eric Zeier won't mind if Murray takes that title.
