NBA Rumors: The Perfect Teams for Grant Hill, Nene and David West

Eric BallDec 8, 2011

One of the biggest luxuries a free agent in professional sports could ever have is being a free agent.

As LeBron so eloquently showed us, it’s the chance for a player to be told how awesome he is and how much he is needed. The situation is all in his hands as he decides what coach, city and group of players he’ll be dealing with.

The following three veterans have earned this right—and plan to make the most of it. Here are my suggestions for each of them.

Grant Hill to the New York Knicks

There already is a New York Post report connecting the two parties, and the rumors are that Hill is over Phoenix.

The Suns look to be in rebuilding mode with Steve Nash leaving in the next year. Hill only has so many miles left on his legs. The Knicks could guarantee him the starting two-guard spot on a team that already employs Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire and Chauncey Billups.

He is also very familiar with coach Mike D’Antoni, since Hill played for him when D'Antoni was coaching in Phoenix.

This team needs a glue guy who does the little things while not complaining about the amount of shots he receives. Considering this is likely to be the last deal he signs, you’d assume winning a championship would be the only real priority—that ain’t happening in Phoenix.

Nene to the New Jersey Nets

These two deserve each other.

The Nets are desperate to sign anybody they can and Nene is looking to get the best deal possible. Nene claims winning is the priority, but his extensive talks with teams like the Nets and Warriors say otherwise.

He would put up great numbers alongside Deron Williams, and could shore up a front line that doesn’t even scare Kim Kardashian.

Nene gets his money, the Nets get somebody to sell to their dwindling fan base and everybody is happy.

David West to the Indiana Pacers

The Mavericks, Spurs, Heat and Hawks are all interested in West, according to Ken Berger of CBS Sports, but none of those teams can afford the sort of salary necessary to secure one of the best pick-and-pop players in today’s game.

If it wasn’t for a blown out knee, West would be the prize free agent in this year’s class. The Pacers are a young team that still has massive holes up front. Inserting a vet like West—who played his college ball relatively close by at Xavier—would instantly make the team anywhere from five to eight wins better. That’s the difference between another eighth seed and a sixth seed—something that is incredibly important in the top-heavy East Conference.

West would be the big fish in a small pond and could become the face of the franchise (sorry Danny Granger). With a few other shrewd moves, the Pacers could be a contender for a championship in the next two or three years.

Oh, and they have the money to give him a huge deal. What’s not to love?
