Georges St-Pierre: "Jon Jones Is One of the Best Fighters in UFC History"
Jon Jones could already be at the apex of his MMA career. The world just may not know it yet.
For months, fans have debated Jones' placement in the pound-for-pound list, but UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre believes the 24-year-old's abilities and accomplishments transcends rankings.
"I think Jon Jones is actually one of the best in UFC history right now. What he has done is amazing," St-Pierre told MMA:30.
So far in 2011, Jones has bested Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Ryan Bader to capture the UFC light heavyweight title and ascend to the top of the 205-pound rankings. His résumé speaks volumes for an unorthodox and well-rounded style that is unrivaled by any other fighter in the sport.
After defeating Shogun in March, fans were already clamoring about Jones bumping to heavyweight and challenging the likes of Junior Dos Santos, Cain Velasquez and Brock Lesnar.
In the entire history of the sport, there has never been a fighter as young as Jones climb the MMA hierarchy so quickly.
With that said, there is a certain degree of hesitance that comes with Jones' youthfulness. He has achieved a monumental feat in winning a UFC title, but after only one successful title defense, isn't it a tad too early to begin greatest-of-all-time talk?
"It's too early. He's too new to the sport. He hasn't done close to what Anderson has in the sport," said MMA legend Dan Henderson in an interview with MMA:30. "I think he's got a great future, so for sure, he's capable of achieving [all-time greatness]. It's just a matter of how dedicated he can stay."
Jones will have an opportunity to add to his résumé at UFC 140 when he meets former light heavyweight champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida. A dominant victory over a fighter of Machida's stature would certainly turn heads and possibly propel Jones up the pound-for-pound ladder.
