Celtic Win at Rangers But Fail to Impress

Andrew McNairDec 26, 2008

Over 50,000 Old Firm fans packed into Ibrox this lunchtime expecting the usual Old Firm thriller but it wasn't to be.

Rangers couldn't get the goal they craved and Celtic scored their first shot on target to win the Old Firm derby 1-0.

In truth, it was a horrendous game, an appalling advert for Scottish football.

Rangers looked nervous and never once looked like breaking into their stride. Kris Boyd wasn't sharp in the box and missed a guilt edged chance early in the second half which proved very costly indeed.

Kirk Broadfoot was at fault for the goal and with the exception of Pedro Mendes and Allan McGregor, the whole side should be hanging their heads in shame.

Amazingly, Celtic were even worse and offered nothing to what is meant to be the best game in Britain.

One moment of magic from Scott McDonald stole the points for the Bhoys. The Aussie striker held the ball up well with his chest in the box before wrong footing Broadfoot and volleying an unstoppable shot across McGregor into the corner of the net.

As a result, the Parkhead side are now seven points ahead of their Glasgow rivals but the league is far from over.

Celtic's current side is the worst in recent memory and will definitely drop more points this season. Boruc was terrible again today and looked a shadow of his former self. Rangers made the Celtic defense look good today by doing everything wrong but plenty of other Scottish Premier League teams have shown themselves capable of unlocking it.

Rangers have a better side than the one that reached the UEFA Cup Final last year but struggle to show the consistency of their predecessors.

They ran out of idea's today with a narrow side, there was no width, with full backs Steven Whittaker and Sasa Papac struggling to get forward, wide midfielders Steven Davis and Charlie Adam were more comfortable cutting inside and not providing the width Rangers needed.

Because of this, Celtic easily snuffed out the attacking threat.

They did look the better side however, and after the euphoria of the win dies down, many Celtic fans will be asking, how did we win that or how bad are we?

The league is therefore in my opinion, Rangers' to win.

They are a better side on paper with less trouble behind the scenes and should be capable of catching Celtic but, as we all know, football isn't played on paper.

Celtic came to Ibrox looking for a tight 1-0 win (or possibly even a draw) and they have gone home happy.

It is now up to Rangers to respond and go on a long winning run or the Scottish Premier League trophy will once again be decked in green and white come May.
