Seattle Seahawks Fans Plan to Revive the 'Blue Wave' on Monday Night Football

Darin PikeDec 6, 2011

The Seattle Seahawks teams of the early and mid-1980s were known for playing some pretty good defense. The fans were known for bringing the noise and bringing the wave to the Kingdome.

In 1985, several players cut a song claiming "The Blue Wave is on a Roll." Those of us that remember it will enjoy the trip down memory lane.

Seahawks fans that aren't familiar with the tune should still give it a listen, even though they may not be familiar with Seattle's version of Michael Jackson, Mike Tice or Edwin Bailey.

Seattle fans are creating a move on Facebook and Twitter to try to bring some of the '80s swagger to CenturyLink field. Fans attending the game are being encouraged to wear Seahawk Blue and remind the national audience how loud they can be. They also want to see the wave return to the stands with the fans all in blue.

The "Wave" was once a Seattle rave that spread quickly to other venues. Seahawks games could have several going at once, and would even have two going in opposite directions.

The action has seemingly fizzled out. Some believe it just became old-hat, but there is another issue.

A large percentage of fans stand at Seahawks home games. The wave loses much of its luster when it is just the arms going up vs. the entire body. That is exacerbated by fans that are already making noise during wave-appropriate times (while the defense is on the field).

A silent wave would be the logical extension while the offense is on the field. Explaining a wave with no cheering might be an undertaking that perhaps only the St. Louis Rams could undertake with an extension of their "Ram Rules" video.

Despite a few disappointing losses this season, the Seahawks do have an outside shot to win their remaining four games. Bleacher Report will feature an article on Friday that will review what needs to happen for Seattle to keep playing beyond the first of January.

As a preface, most of the NFC teams ahead of them are experiencing some challenges. A 9-7 record and their edge in overall conference records could allow Seattle to claim the NFC West's first Wild Card berth since the Rams made the postseason with an 8-8 record following the 2004 season.

This outside shot at the playoffs aside, Seahawks fans are excited about the return of hard-hitting defense to Seattle. Their unit is big, fast and opportunistic.

Seattle has arguably the best young safety tandem in the NFL. Earl Thomas is a ball hawk that is fast enough to provide solid run support. Kam Chancellor is a punishing hitter that is opportunistic with causing turnovers.

These two help the rest of the defense work. A more thorough review of the unit will be printed shortly.

For now, Seahawks fans that plan to attend the game on Monday should also be sure to wear blue. The playoffs may be a year away, but on-field success has never been the deciding factor for Seahawks fans getting loud and supporting their team.
