Keith Marshall: Georgia Bulldogs' Commit Is Dangerous News for Isaiah Crowell

Eric BowmanDec 6, 2011

The Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that the Georgia Bulldogs added commit No. 16 in Keith Marshall on Tuesday, which could spell bad news for freshman sensation Isaiah Crowell.

According to Scout.com, Marshall is the No. 1 running back recruit in the country. This is a huge pickup for the Bulldogs, as that position has been a sight for sore eyes down the stretch of the 2011 season.

Crowell was the No. 1 running back last year, and while he has shown signs of brilliance this season, he has also been suspended once and missed time because of injuries, plus, a poor attitude at times has not gone over well with some of the fans.

The addition of Marshall increases the competition at running back for next year, and it will go one of two ways for Crowell: It will either force him to work harder and reclaim the starting role for 2012, or he'll pack his bags and look to leave because he won't be able to handle splitting time with another player.

A one-two-punch of Crowell and Marshall would definitely give Georgia that strong run game they've been lacking in recent years.

However, if Crowell is too much of a hot head to want to work with Marshall, then he hasn't learned a thing. Nothing in life is given to you, and it's time Crowell proves why he was considered Georgia's most coveted recruit a year ago.

Crowell wasn't able to handle the pressure of being the top guy, so sharing the rock with Marshall might benefit him more. If anything, it should at least motivate him to be better. Nothing like a little competition to bring out the best in your players.

After all, the freshman star should be thinking big picture and how fantastic this is for the team. Focusing on what this all means for him individually is something anyone would naturally do on their own time, but to prove to everyone he's not a diva, he has to back the team's decisions 100 percent.

If he's frustrated that Marshall will be joining him next fall, the best thing to do is to stay and fight for the starting role, and not to run away like a coward.

Radi Nabulsi covers Georgia for ESPN, and he tweeted just how great this news was for the Bulldogs.

Mark Richt pitched the dream team a year ago, and it paid off. Now he's going for round two, and landing Marshall is a huge sigh of relief for the coach who began the year on the hot seat.

As with any team, changes happen every year. Players come and leave all the time, and Crowell must now face the facts and show fans that he is the top Dawg and they should still be excited about him, and not Marshall.

Bulldog fans shouldn't care who comes out on top next season, just as long as both are playing at a high level.

If you're unfamiliar with who Marshall is, ESPN's Kipp Adams tweets some outstanding information that will please every member of Bulldog Nation.

Georgia has had several problems with running backs over the past couple of years, so getting an outstanding student athlete makes this a tremendous for the Bulldogs. Too often do players only focus on football and lose sight of their grades.

Of course, nothing is set in stone, as this is just a verbal commit. High school stars cannot sign with a team until Feb. 1, which means other colleges still have time to pursue Marshall.

Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal Constitution tweeted why Marshall chose Georgia over other schools.

Marshall is from North Carolina, but according to Adams, he has long been a Georgia fan, watching Knowshon Moreno shine and has always been in amazement of Herschel Walker, arguably the greatest college football player of all time.

Clemson has elevated its recruiting to new levels in recent years, landing several top players in recent years. Bulldog fans will hope that Marshall sticks with them, and honestly, so should Crowell.

College football teams are far more successful with two great running backs, and being contested on a day-to-day basis would make Crowell a much better player in the long run.
