NBA Rumors: Who Should Philadelphia Sixers Fans Choose as Their New Mascot?

Donald WoodDec 6, 2011

What fits the Sixers better; a dog, a moose or Ben Franklin?

With a new ownership group in place, the Philadelphia 76ers have extended their hand to the fans of the team by allowing them to pick the new mascot.

The mascot is supposed to be all about fun for the kids, so letting the children of the actual community pick the theme for their new friend will make them want to come to the games and see it. That means more families coming to the games and more money coming through the doors.

Sixers’ officials have decided on three creations by the Jim Henson Creature shop, and the final vote will be done by the fans online. The website gives the fans the power. That’s different.

B. Franklin Dogg—This is essentially a dog dressed up like a Harlem Globetrotter. While I love dogs, this has absolutely nothing to do with the Sixers. I know people will be sad, but the fans are not going to be able to pet the giant dog with the Sixers uniform on.

Phil E. Moose—This one just absolutely blows my mind. What in the heavens were the good people at Jim Henson thinking when they decided to use a moose as the Philadelphia 76ers mascot? As a Philadelphia resident, I have never seen a moose in this area. Phil E. Moose sounds like a character at Chuck E. Cheese.

Big Ben—Of the three, Ben Franklin is the most relevant to the area by far and has significance to the team name. The problem is getting a costume that doesn’t make Big Ben seem like a bloated parade float. Also, the team has to change the name or Ben Roethlisberger will have to sack the lovable Sixers mascot.

Conclusion: Big Ben in a landslide. He is one of the father’s of our nation and a Philadelphia staple, the least we can do is march a caricature version of his old, bloated body onto the court 41 games a season.
