NFL Picks Week 14: Double-Digit Home Favorites Guaranteed to Cover

Adam WellsDec 6, 2011

December in the NFL is supposed to be a time of marquee matchups and great games that will determine playoff positioning. But as we all know, there are going to be times when there are mismatches that don't end up being exciting games.

A vast majority of the time these kinds of games will go in favor of the home team. That makes sense, because they are playing in a comfortable environment, don't have to travel and get that extra adrenaline rush from the crowd.

That is going to be the case in Week 14. There are some lopsided matchups on paper that will play out exactly like you would expect them to. It may be boring to go with the favorites to win, but you can't predict an upset just to predict an upset.

Here are three games that have blowout written all over them.

Cleveland Browns vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (minus-14)

Just think, there was a time when this rivalry actually meant something.

The Browns have had moments this season where they look like they are turning things around. They were 3-4 after seven games, but have lost five of their last six. They will have another losing season and enter the offseason with all kinds of questions, particularly at quarterback, running back and wide receiver.

The Steelers, meanwhile, are as hot as a team can be. Their defense is firing on all cylinders, which is good news as they enter the postseason. The offense still isn’t consistent enough to be dangerous, but they do have the playmakers to be great.

This will be nothing more than a showcase for the Steelers and a way for them to send a message to the rest of the AFC that they are still the kings.

Indianapolis Colts vs Baltimore Ravens (minus-16.5)

Considering how the Ravens have played this season, it would not surprise me in the least if they had a hiccup and lost this game to the Colts.

However, there is no way to bet on the Colts the rest of the season. I know that they had great numbers on offense last week against New England, and Dan Orlovsky actually threw for more yards than Tom Brady.

But the Patriots basically gave up in the fourth quarter. They were up 31-3 and had no incentive to keep playing their starters, so the yardage the Colts gained struck me as hollow.

Ray Rice, meanwhile, just torched the Cleveland Browns for over 200 yards. The Colts defensive line can’t stop anyone from running the ball. Don’t be shocked to see another huge game from the Ravens running back.

Ravens 35, Colts 10

Oakland Raiders vs Green Bay Packers (minus-11)

After a few weeks of praising them for being the best team in the AFC West, the Oakland Raiders go out and lay an egg against the Miami Dolphins. They were down by 34 points in that game before scoring two meaningless touchdowns.

Now, they have to go into Green Bay and take on the undefeated Packers and the unstoppable machine that is Aaron Rodgers.

You can say all that you want to about the Packers defense, but I don’t think they really care about the yardage they give up or how many points the opposing team scores because the offense is going to put up at least 35 points every time out.
