Cotto vs. Margarito 2: Cotto's Next Fight Needs to Be Mayweather, Not Pacquiao
We're going to hear a lot of talk about Miguel Cotto possibly getting back in the ring with Manny Pacquiao after he avenged his loss to Antonio Margarito.
Cotto, a 31-year-old Puerto Rican, was beaten up by Pacquiao in November of 2009, losing by TKO in the 12th round.
That fight was Cotto's last loss and he's since put together three impressive performances against Yuri Foreman, Ricardo Mayorga and Margarito. He won all three by TKO and now has the opportunity to put together a super-fight.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Saul Alvarez and Delvin Rodriquez (who won his bout on the Cotto-Margarito card) would all be fairly exciting options.
But Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr. would draw the most attention.
We've already seen Pac-Man and Cotto. But we haven't seen Money and Cotto.
He doesn't stand a great chance against either fighter, but Money already has a May 5th date established as his next fight and even already has the MGM Grand booked. All he is missing now is an opponent.
Cotto benefits from taking on either opponent, but thinking that Pacquiao is susceptible after his questionable defeat of Juan Manuel Marquez would be a mistake.
But Mayweather, who is coming off his controversial fourth-round knockout of Victor Ortiz, is looking for the biggest fight he can get.
On the heels of his biggest fight since losing to Pacquiao, Cotto would be wise to capitalize on the biggest fight he can get as quickly as possible.
Right now that fight is with Mayweather.
