Fantasy Football Start Em & Sit Em: Week 17

Michael WhooleyDec 25, 2008

As we get set for Week 17, remember that some fantasy guys will be naughty, while others will be nice. To help you sort them out, the Bruno Boys provide you with the Week 17 Start Em & Sit Em.

QUARTERBACKS - START 'EM

Philip Rivers (San Diego Chargers) vs. Denver

Following a disappointing home loss to the Atlanta Falcons back in week 13, it appeared as if the San Diego Chargers' playoffs hopes were dead in the water, but thanks to three straight wins, the Chargers will be battling it out with the Denver Broncos for the AFC West title this Sunday night.

Rivers has been a big part of the Chargers' recent success as the QB has thrown for 847 yards, nine TDs, and just one INT in the team's last three games. He should come up with yet another big game this Sunday, as the Broncos rank 27th against the pass, and don't forget, when these two teams first met this year, Rivers went for an impressive 377 yards, three TDs, and just one INT.

If he's anywhere close to those numbers this time around, which Bruno Boys feel he will be, look for the Chargers to claim the AFC West crown.

Seneca Wallace (Seattle Seahawks) @ Arizona

Even if the likes of Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger were going a full 60 minutes this Sunday, Wallace would still be worthy of QB1 status. The Seattle Seahawks' quarterback has done an admirable job filling in for starter Matt Hasselbeck.

In nine games, he has posted 1,282 yards, nine TDs, and just one INT. He should add to those numbers this weekend against the 20th-ranked pass defense of the Arizona Cardinals, a squad that has yielded the most passing TDs of any defense in the NFL at 34.

Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons) vs. St. Louis

While Ryan has stumbled a bit the past two weeks, tallying just five and nine fantasy points, the rookie has been instrumental this season in the Falcons' turnaround, helping them secure a playoff spot already.

In fact, the team still has a shot at the AFC South title, and while they will need a Carolina Panthers loss to claim the crown, the Falcons will take care of their side of business by defeating the St.Louis Rams on Sunday.

A game in which Ryan will bounce back to the double-digit form he exhibited from Week 12 to Week 14 as the Rams rank 23rd against the pass, allowing 221.4 yards per game along with 19 passing TDs on the year.

QUARTERBACKS - SIT 'EM

Brett Favre (New York Jets) @ Miami

Yes, Miami's weakness on the defensive side of the ball is their secondary, evidenced by the fact that they rank 25th against the pass, but that doesn't mean you utilize Favre in what could be his last game in the NFL.

Favre is in a funk rght now. Over the last four games, he's thrown six interceptions while connecting for just one touchdown. His highest fantasy point total in that span is a 10-point effort. There's a reason that it's Miami and not the Jets controlling their own destiny this Sunday, and a big part of it is Favre's struggles.

Control your own destiny and keep the future Hall of Famer on your bench.

JaMarcus Russell (Oakland Raiders) @ Tampa Bay

Kudos to JaMarcus Russell as the Raiders' QB is finally tapping into his potential with two straight games in which he's thrown for over 225 yards and two scores. Those numbers have translated into back to back 15 point fantasy days.

While that's important to note for 2009, it doesn't mean you should rely on him here in 2008, especially against a Tampa Bay team that ranks 5th against the pass.

David Garrard (Jacksonville Jaguars) @ Baltimore

Garrard has gone for double-digit fantasy points in five straight games, including two straight 20+ point outings over the last two weeks. Unfortunately, his season will end on a sour note as he'll be taking on the stout pass defense of the Baltimore Ravens. Ranking third against the pass, the Ravens have allowed a mere 183.2 passing yards per game.

They've also intercepted more passes (24) than they've allowed into the end zone (16). Garrard has no power to choose his week 17 match-up, you however can choose not to go with him. That would make for a wise decision.
