NBA Free Agents: Teams Grant Hill Needs to Consider Signing with
Grant Hill is drawing attention from a lot of teams, particularly those in playoff contention. It's a nice twist for the 38-year-old small forward to get so much attention in the sunset of his career.
After a brilliant start to his career, in which he also became the first rookie ever to lead the NBA in All-Star voting, Hill saw his career take several hits when he was beset by injuries. Once one of the more prolific offensive players hampered and slowed by his injuries, Hill has reinvented himself in Phoenix as one of the better defensive wings.
It certainly is commendable that Hill has expressed interest in returning to Phoenix—loyalty is a good thing—but Hill should consider signing with one of the several contenders that are reported to be showing interest in him.
Here is the short list of teams that Hill should give thought to signing for.
New York Knicks
One team that has reached out to Hill is the New York Knicks. Hill spent one year with coach MIke D'Antoni with the Suns, so he already knows the system. He also played three years with their star power forward, Amar'e Soudemire.
That kind of familiarity would be in his favor. His leadership and "glue" mentality would be a huge asset to the Knicks.
If he wants to have a chance to pursue a ring with the smoothest transition, the Knicks would be the place to go.
Chicago Bulls
The Chicago Bulls have also made a pitch to Hill. The Bulls are probably the team with the best chance of winning it all who have actually reached out to Hill that I can verify (as opposed to the Miami Heat, who have been mentioned in conjunction with Hill, but I cannot find a source actually saying they have).
On the Bulls, Hill would likely have a chance to start, with either he or Luol Deng making the move to shooting guard.
His defensive presence and better scoring ability than that of Keith Bogans would make for an interesting fit with the Bulls.
His improved three-point shot the last two seasons would also come in handy there. Last year, Derrick Rose had the highest percentage of assists of any point guard going for three-point shots.
In short, if Hill wants a shot at a ring, Chicago is the best place to go.
New Jersey Nets
The Nets might not be considered to have a shot at a ring as quickly, but having already acquired Deron Williams at the trade deadline, that could change. Rumors last week had them making a pitch for Dwight Howard.
According to the New York Post they have an interest in Grant Hill as well. The Nets are poised to be putting together a team that could compete.
With the Nets moving to Brooklyn, Hill could be a part of something historic if he signs with them.
