2011Bowl Games: Cotton Bowl and the Highest Scoring Bowl Games

Eric BallDec 4, 2011

Can I interest you in some high-scoring bowl games sure to keep you awake despite consuming six glasses of eggnog?

The full release of the 2011-2012 bowl games is out and as usual they provide us with some intriguing match-ups for a variety of reasons.

The one that jumps off the page is the Cotton Bowl that pits No. 9 Kansas State vs. No. 6 Arkansas. The two teams combine to average 70 points per game.

The Razor Backs are an impressive 15th in the country in scoring (37.4) despite playing in the rugged SEC West. Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson (3422 yards, 22 TDs) has blown the gasket off preseason expectations, and has done-so with his leading rusher collecting a mere 637 yards.

Not to be outdone, KSU is 30th in the nation in points scored, including a 59-point effort against Kansas and 53 against Texas A&M.They do major damage with a run game that features two backs that have rushed for over 930 yards.

Cowboys Stadium is used to high-scoring affairs and you can bet the crowd will be treated to another one on January 6th.

Here are two other games sure to feature plenty of offensive fireworks.

Las Vegas Bowl: Arizona State vs. No. 7 Boise State

I'm not here to count the reasons why the Broncos got absolutely screwed, but may I remind you they were seventh in the nation in scoring at 43.3 per game, and have a Heisman candidate in QB Kellen Moore (3507 yards and 41 TDs).

They put up 40 or more points SEVEN times this season. They were one field goal kick away from perfection. With their BCS dreams shattered, expect them to take out their anger on a Arizona State team currently 64th in the nation in points against.

Can the Broncos put up 50?

The Sun Devils, who average over 33 points a game, are no slouch either.

Independence Bowl: Missouri vs. North Carolina

The Tigers defense may have let them down this season, but you can't put any of the blame on the offense. They scored over 32 points a game because of an incredibly balanced attack that features a great QB in James Franklin (2740 yards, 20 TDs) and a terrific running back in Henry Josey (1168, nine TDs).

They are going to put up a boat load of points on a Tar Heels team that surrendered 59 points to Clemson and 35 to an average Georgia Tech squad. They seem to be declining by the week. Yet don't discount the Tar Heels offense that averages over four TDs per game.

Should be a wild one at the Independence Bowl.
