LSU vs Alabama Rematch: 1-Point Spread Shows Vegas Doesn't Want You to Bet It

Matt ShetlerDec 4, 2011

One of the main thing the bowl season offers up college football fans is another month of games to watch, but it also offers up another month of wagering for the gamblers out there.

At the end of the day, the last college football game of the year to wager on will be the rematch between LSU and Alabama in the BCS Championship Game.

Vegas loves to take your money on losing football wagers but, judging by the opening line of LSU favored by one-point, does Vegas even want you betting this game?

Naturally, they know people will bet usually with the opening line. Vegas is telling you in essence which way they want you to play the game. Then during the week, the line is moved up or down depending on the money wagered on each side.

In this case with the one-point opening line, they seem to be guessing on this game like the rest of the nation.

An undefeated LSU—who already beat the same Alabama team on the road and finished a grueling schedule unbeaten—certainly should be more than a one-point favorite in the rematch. By no means should they be laying a touchdown, but somewhere between two and three-points should have been expected.

What does the one-point line suggest?

Quite simply that the odds makers aren't too crazy about seeing a ton of money wagered on this game. By keeping the line as close as possible to a pick 'em, they are simply trying to avoid a huge loss on the title game.

Nothing else really explains why the opening line is so low. Again, it's the same LSU team that already defeated Alabama and both teams will enter the BCS Championship Game close to healthy. There is no reason that the game shouldn't have opened up with the Tigers around a 2.5-point favorite.

The line will move a little, probably as soon as the next few days, but when wagering tread carefully.

The odds-makers in Vegas aren't crazy about this rematch and they have already let you know it.
