BCS Bowl Games 2012: Twitter Explodes with Reaction to BCS Selections
After many months of deliberation, pontification, heated arguments and all-around numb-skullery, the matchups for the five BCS bowls are finally set in stone.
In case you haven't already caught wind of the matchups, I'll let SI.com's Stewart Mandel explain:
On balance, no real surprises.
Well, maybe except for Virginia Tech getting the nod for the Sugar Bowl.
Regardless, Twitter is alive with reactions to the big reveal. Let's take a moment to stop and acknowledge the best and the brightest the Twitterverse has to offer.
Before we do anything else, we should take a look at what people think of the BCS National Championship Game rematch between LSU and Alabama.
Truth be told, it seems the majority of people aren't very thrilled about the idea of watching a rematch. There are some positive reactions to the news here and there, but the main reaction is a negative one.
This guy thinks it's all the voters' fault, and he's not happy about it:
The biggest problem, according to one very smart fan, is that the LSU versus Alabama rematch does not prove who the best team in the country is:
To be fair, there is a counterpoint to this point. I'll let this obvious SEC homer explain:
Of course, there is a counterpoint to this counterpoint. This fan summarizes it thusly:
Either way, Bleacher Report's Eric Bowman has the truth of it all:
No matter how you want to spin it, I personally think this fan has a great idea about what should happen next:
Not listed among the selections for the five BCS bowl games? The Boise State Broncos. They ended the season as the No. 7 team in the country, but they got shut out because... well, because the BCS says so.
Then again, Boise State didn't win its conference, so why should it get to go to a BCS bowl?
Wait, never mind. I'll let this guy explain:
Then again, this guy points out that the Broncos kinda screwed themselves:
Remember how I mentioned I was surprised to see Virginia Tech get the nod for the Sugar Bowl? Well, FOXSports.com's Lisa Horne is surprised too. In fact, she's downright insulted:
This Kansas sports blogger agrees, and he argues that the Big 12 was more deserving of the BCS love:
So how can all of this anger be done away with? Is there anything that could make everybody happy?
Actually, yes. Courtesy of Virginia Tech beat writer Andy Bitter:
Damn right. As it is, there is a fundamental flaw with the current system. As ESPN.com's Rick Reilly points out, it's not very fair to give one team two shots at a title:
Well, it's too late now. The deed is done and the matchups are set. The good news is that it won't be long before all this is over and done with.
Oh...wait...never mind.
