Cotto vs. Margarito 2: Why There Shouldn't Be a Third Fight to Settle the Score
Miguel Cotto got revenge last night on Antonio Margarito as the Puerto Rican got a ninth-round TKO.
Since Margarito got the best of Cotto back in 2008, many might feel that a third fight should be scheduled to settle the score once and for all.
That just isn't the case, however.
In the first bout, Margarito lost almost all of the earlier rounds and then came back with a ridiculous fury to TKO Cotto in the 11th round. It was quite possibly one of the best fights of the year.
It was an impressive win for Margarito, sure, but those thoughts soon died.
Margarito was caught with a plaster-like substance on his wrapped hands against Shane Mosley during his next fight, and it was revealed he did the same thing against Cotto.
Essentially, to sum it up, he cheated.
That's why this second fight was so important.
Margarito did his punishment, and now this was a battle we knew would be more evenly matched. Cotto simply showed he was a better fighter.
Last night's fight was nine lopsided rounds. Cotto went after Margarito and completely dominated him. He eventually closed Margarito's eye all the way an El Tornado couldn't go on.
The match was over just like that.
So let's recap.
Margarito won a close-fought battle, a battle which later revealed he had cheated. Then, with all things even, Cotto absolutely dominated.
While each fighter may have one win after these two fights, it's clear they aren't even. I know I don't need a third bout to crown Miguel Cotto as the better fighter, and I don't think anyone else does, either.
