2011 Bowl Projections: Why Oklahoma State Isn't BCS Championship Worthy
At 11-1, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are undoubtedly one of the best teams in the nation, but I have a very hard time believing that they deserve the national championship.
On paper, they have an incredible resume as a team.
They are second in the nation in scoring and passing, putting up 49.3 points per game and 386.3 yards per game through the air, and have huge wins over Texas A&M, Texas, Kansas State and Oklahoma on their resume.
The most impressive coming against rival Oklahoma, where they demolished the No. 10 team in the nation, 44-10, and secured the undisputed top spot in the Big 12.
Senior quarterback Brandon Weeden put up an exceptional year, throwing for 4,328 yards and 34 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, completing 379-of-522 for an impressive 72.6 completion percentage and a 159.1 quarterback rating.
Weeden was exceptional, but there is no doubting that he had some incredible talent around him.
Sophomore running back Joseph Randle ran for 1,193 yards and 23 touchdowns, and junior wide receiver Justin Blackmon put up an exceptional 1,336 yards and 15 touchdowns.
All in all, this team makes a strong case for a national championship bid, but they do have one glaring black-mark on their resume that I firmly believe will keep them out of the BCS championship game.
The Cowboys near-perfect season was absolutely shattered with a double overtime heartbreaker loss to the unranked Iowa State Cyclones, who finished the season at 6-6 and 3-6 in the Big 12.
The Cyclones put up 568 total yards at home, which included 192 on the ground. They also forced the Cowboys into five turnovers.
While everything else about the Cowboys season may seem BCS championship worthy, this alone negates all the good that the have done this season.
It's official that a one-loss team will meet up with undefeated LSU in the championship game, but when looking at the other teams in play, Alabama and Stanford, both of their losses came against superior-ranked opponents, and Alabama's actually game against said LSU team team in overtime.
In a BCS system that favors strength of schedule, Okalhoma State's lone loss to Iowa State will be the one factor that will make them unworthy of the national championship.
