Ray Allen Extreme Makeover Video: Watch Celitcs Hero Change a Child's Life
Ray Allen of the Boston Celtics is the classiest guy in the NBA, and he does so much for the community.
Friday's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on ABC was supposed to include Ray Allen visiting a huge Celtics fan, eight-year-old Charles Walker, in his awesome new room that any Boston sports fan would dream of. In fact, it may be the coolest bedroom I've ever seen.
In April of 2009, Charles' brother, Carl, took his own life at age 11. Carl was often bullied and after his death, Sirdeaner Walker, his mother, became a spokeswoman for anti-bullying campaigns.
In September, Extreme Makeover went to Springfield, Massachusetts to give what they do for so many families: a fresh start.
The Walkers were given a new home to begin a new chapter of their lives in, and many volunteers helped make it all possible.
Unfortunately, due to the NBA lockout, the clips from this episode were not able to be aired. When the NBA lockout began in July, TV shows could not feature an NBA player or league-licensed products, even if they had permission before the lockout, according to the New York Times.
Here is some of what Allen said about the difficulties the lockout brought into the show:
"“It wasn’t about me being on TV; I didn’t care about that,” Allen said in a phone interview. “The first thing I thought of was how devastated this young kid Charles was going to be, when he sits down with whole town of Springfield and they don’t show the human side of his story and his emotions and having his favorite player sitting in his room. I’m sure he told everybody in school that I was there.”
"
By the time the lockout ended in late November, it was too late to put Allen's scenes from the episode back into the show.
Sometimes during sports lockouts, we don't realize everyone who is affected. Due to millionaires arguing and bickering over who gets what, Allen's awesome story with Charles wasn't able to be seen in the way it was intended.
But that won't stop Ray Allen from making a difference in a child's life. Lockout or not, Ray cares about his community and is one of the NBA players who truly cares about helping others.
Even with the lockout making the process difficult, Allen was still there for Charles and gave him some moments he'll never forget.
I mean, playing basketball in your room with Ray Allen—it doesn't get any cooler than that.
