BCS Rankings: Alabama Shouldn't Be Worried About Losing No. 2 Ranking
Despite Oklahoma State's dominating win over rival Oklahoma on Saturday night, Alabama should not be worried that they will lose their No. 2 ranking in the BCS and a spot in the national title game.
Oklahoma State may have played more ranked teams, but a number of those teams, such as Texas, Texas A&M, Kansas State and even Oklahoma could be considered overrated.
While the Big 12 has been competitive this season, there are zero standout teams from the conference that the Cowboys can point to and say, "Hey, we beat them."
When you compare each of the team's losses, the argument for Oklahoma State getting into the BCS title game ends.
The Cowboys lost in overtime to an average-at-best Iowa State team, while the Crimson Tide lost to the best team in the country, LSU, by just a field goal in overtime.
The point of the BCS is to find the two best teams in the country and put them in the national championship game, regardless if they are from the same conference or have played each other already.
Alabama and LSU are clearly the best two teams—it's not even close. The Crimson Tide defense would be able to handle the Cowboys offense no problem.
On defense the Cowboys would struggle to beat LSU or Alabama. They are 61st in the nation in points allowed, and gave up 24-plus points to Kansas, Tulsa, Missouri and Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys had a great year and deserve a BCS bowl game berth, but they should not play for the title.
They had their path to the title game carved out and they blew it against a very inferior Iowa State team.
Alabama could have easily defeated LSU at home on November 5, and played the Tigers tougher than anyone else this season.
They deserve a rematch with everything at stake. The Crimson Tide will deservedly get that come January.
