Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State: Crazy Pokes Fans Injured After Storming the Field
Oklahoma State has not won a Bedlam game against the rival Oklahoma Sooners since 2002 and fans celebrated after the game in Stillwater like you would expect them to.
Students rushed the field and wildly partied after their Pokes won the de facto Big 12 championship game and now have a good shot of making the national title.
Unfortunately, a few of these people that were basking in the Cowboys’ victory sustained some minor injuries and kept the staff at the local emergency medical provider a bit busy last night.
Michael Authement of LifeNet EMS oversaw the care of a few patients at his clinic last night after being on the field.
"He said the crowd was so big it took police at least 45 minutes to clear fans from the field at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater. "There were thousands of people. Thousands of people stormed the field. You couldn't move there were so many people," he added.
"
Shyla Eggers, the PR director for Stillwater Medical Center, also confirmed that a number of minor injuries were treated at her hospital stemming from the aftermath of the Pokes big win.
Most of the wounds weren’t serious with many of the injured suffering from just sprained ankles or backs. A few of the more serious cases were fractured legs and broken ankles and two people were flown to other hospitals in the state for additional treatment.
Luckily, there are no known fatalities and the celebration after the game was relatively peaceful.
Fans are going to react in a wild manner after their team wins a contest against a rival for the first time in nearly a decade. It's how a school and community deals with it that tells the story.
The Stillwater police managed to handle it admirably and the medical personnel in the area did a good job treating those who were injured during the fracas.
Hopefully these students don't riot once again if the Pokes miss the national championship game.
