Boxing Results: Cotto's Domination Should Bring on Pac-Man Rematch

Justin WeltonDec 4, 2011

Miguel Cotto absolutely dominated Antonio Margarito throughout the fight on Saturday night in front of a sold out Madison Square Garden crowd. Cotto sealed the deal, unlike the first time, by winning with a technical knockout in the 10th round.

Cotto’s loss count remains at two. One of his losses came against Margarito and the other is against Manny Pacquiao. He avenged one loss on Saturday night, but his domination of Margarito should give him the opportunity to avenge his defeat to Pac-Man.

Floyd Mayweather and Pacquiao’s future “fight of the century” may never even happen. We have been waiting around for years to see that tilt, but we still don’t have a set date.

It should happen, but it probably won’t.

So where does the sport of boxing go next? Well, the next best thing would be to give Cotto his rematch with Pacquiao.

Cotto destroyed Margarito on Saturday night. Cotto landed 210 punches out of 493 punches thrown. Margarito was only able to land 157 of 700. It was a technical masterpiece by Cotto. He beat Margarito to a pulp.

I believe that Cotto was more determined and focused than any other time in his career. Could you imagine a focused Cotto against Pacquiao? That would be an unbelievable fight.

Given how much Pac-Man struggled against Juan Manuel Marquez, you would have to believe that Cotto would have a fighter’s chance.

He was overmatched in their first fight in 2009. Pac-Man landed 336 punches out of 780 punches thrown compared to Cotto’s 172 punches landed out of 597. It was a dominating performance.

However, we have seen how Cotto can respond to a loss. He would go into a fight with Pacquiao with a much better strategy. He wouldn’t be so overwhelmed because he would know what to expect.

It would be a completely different fight.

A third fight with Margarito wouldn’t be bad, but I want the stars in the ring.

I want to see Mayweather or Pacquiao. Now that the average fan—if they didn’t know his name already—knows what Cotto is all about then I’m sure the ratings would be through the roof.

Pac-Man vs. Cotto should only happen if Mayweather-Pacquiao doesn’t. We all want to see the two giants clash, but when do you draw the line and say that it won’t happen?

We can hope all we want, but I won’t believe it until we actually have a date. For now, a realistic future bout between Pac-Man and Cotto would be as exciting as we are going to get.
