BCS Championship Game: Why LSU-Alabama Rematch May Not Settle BCS Title

Dan VastaDec 3, 2011

Oh boy, the Bayou Bengals just destroyed Georgia 42-10 in the SEC championship and are only one win from a BCS National Championship.

However, what on earth is going to happen if Alabama pulls off a close victory in another low-scoring contest?

Well, of course Alabama will be proclaimed as BCS National Champions, but for the fans out there can we really say that Alabama is the better team since LSU already beat them in their own backyard in Tuscaloosa?

I, for one, think this matchup will be the most anticipated game that we may see in the current BCS era. USC-Texas will forever be a legendary matchup, but this could live up to it (at least on paper).

The amount of future NFL stars will make this an absolute slugfest, with players from both sides obliterating one another on every snap.

So it should go without saying: What happens if this Alabama-LSU matchup comes down to the wire and LSU loses?

Will most “experts” say Alabama is the clear-cut better team? Now the game is played in the Louisiana Superdome, so if Alabama were to blow them out then there is certainly no argument.

Who knows, maybe LSU will blow Alabama out, leaving no doubt regarding which is the top team. Don't ask Nick Saban if the first matchup was entertaining because he may eat your head off, but the slugfest will be great a second time around.

Still, this game very well could come down to special teams, and you have to like the way LSU is playing right now with Tyrann Mathieu and Morris Claiborne bringing back punts and interceptions to the house.

LSU could not get one first down in the entire first half versus Georgia Saturday afternoon, and yet there was no panic in the locker room. In fact, LSU played like a team possessed, outscoring the Bulldogs 35-0 in the second half for the SEC championship.

They did not do it in usual fashion by just toting the rock and hammering away, but they continually won the field position battle in the second half thanks to punter Brad Wing.

Back to the main argument though: we have not had any doubt of a national champion since USC shared it with LSU back in 2004.

Would it be fair to anoint the Crimson Tide as title winner if they just squeak by the Tigers? This is coming off a 9-6 game decided in overtime, in which Alabama did miss three field goals (and one was also blocked) in the teams' first encounter. Was that a fluke victory or did Alabama’s offense stall because due to a great Tigers defense?

That question will have to wait until Jan. 9th, when everything finally gets decided—or so we all hope.
