LSU vs. Alabama Rematch: 5 Reasons This Will Be Another Awesome Game
Nobody wants to see November 5th happen again.
November 5th was a classic game of the nation's top defenses proving to millions of viewers why they are the top two defenses. Nobody wants to see the missed FG's, miscues on offense, or the just-settle-for-overtime attitude from either of the teams this time around.
When LSU faced Alabama in November, the game didn't really impress football fans outside of the SEC. In all honesty, it didn't really impress LSU or 'Bama fans, either.
Defensively, LSU and 'Bama brought their "A-game," but the offenses struggled. Granted, the offenses struggled a bit due to the defenses they were facing, but that wasn't all the struggling we saw on that day.
There are over 200 reasons this would be an awesome game, but listing the players on each roster would be a short and cheap article.
Here are five real reasons the game would be awesome.
LSU vs. Georgia, SEC Championship Game 2011
1 of 5LSU trailed Georgia for almost the entire first half of the SEC Championship Game today. (The only time LSU wasn't trailing was while Georgia was moving the ball into FG range.) Georgia was two dropped passes—both well-thrown—from leading 24-7 at halftime.
What Georgia DID do today, was give Alabama a road map as to how to turn their 10-50-yard line success into the end zone success 'Bama could have had in the first meeting.
The first half of this game exposed LSU. Georgia wasn't converting trick plays, they were simply moving the ball on LSU, much the same as 'Bama was in November.
LSU's first-half performance has embarrassed the LSU defense. I think 'Bama has a decent idea of what it takes to beat LSU. LSU has the determination and talent to make sure 'Bama doesn't come out and "go all Georgia" on their butts.
Georgia forced LSU into four straight three-and-outs to start the game. I don't think LSU is interested in getting behind 'Bama by 10 points. 'Bama is DEFINITELY interested in putting them there.
Two teams with both sides of the ball showing up with their A-game—sign me up!
Tyrann Mathieu
2 of 5Tyrann Mathieu is not just a player on the LSU roster. He's a beast on defense—and an extreme threat on special teams.
No. 7 is looking to get another shot at 'Bama to improve his hype going into next season. For a real shot at the Heisman, he apparently needs to send a message louder than the one he sent to Oregon in the season opener.
It's noisy at the top with Trent Richardson, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. I think the volume level of a BCS National Championship Game against the No. 1 defense in the country will be enough to start him out highly next season.
In championship games, you let your play-makers make plays. Mathieu is that for LSU. It will be awesome to watch him make his plays.
Trent Richardson
3 of 5If Trent wins the Heisman, he will want to prove to the voters in this (quite possibly his last) college game that they made the right choice.
If Trent doesn't win the Heisman, he will want to show them that they made the wrong choice, whoever they chose over him.
If Trent doesn't care at all about his possible Heisman trophy, he will STILL be coming out onto the field with the chip on his shoulder from November. He's a team player, and 'Bama lost the first match. He will do everything in his power to make sure that doesn't happen again.
Trent Richardson is possibly the best player in college football, and he will be looking to make LSU's "Honey Badger" ineffective by running the ball down LSU's throat.
Les Miles
4 of 5LSU's Les Miles has been dubbed "The Mad Hatter." In November, he appeared more Saban-esque than Nick Saban did.
Les Miles will be facing his opponent with the crystal football on the line. He probably won't do anything stupid, as we have learned from his past. He generally calls the trick plays when they will work.
Miles played Saban's game in November, and squeaked out a win.
Miles will be coming in January with a month of preparation, and I expect a huge amount of "Miles-ness" from him this time around.
Win or lose, watching Miles is always entertaining and awesome.
Nick Saban
5 of 5Nick Saban has a special place in his heart for the media. (And it's NOT on the good side.)
As a group, we have made him pay dearly for the questionable calls in the first meeting.
He will not alter his game plan to fit what the "armchair quarterbacks" think he should be doing. I don't want him to.
He came out in the November game and looked more "Miles-esque" than Les Miles did. (Especially with the Marquis Maze pass into the end zone.)
Look for Saban to come out and play "Saban-ball."
Saban is one of the best in the country, if not the best. Generally speaking, he develops players FOR championships, not IN championship games.
While a lot of us here in the media thought he should have treated November as a championship, he clearly did not.
Make no mistake, this will be a Saban team, coached by Saban, playing Saban ball in a Saban-recognized championship game.
If that doesn't get your mouth watering for a rematch, then check your pulse or switch over to basketball, where the scores are 60-plus per team even with good defense.
