BCS Bowl Predictions: Title Game Is Destined to Leave Us Clamoring for a Playoff
This year's title game is going to raise more questions than answers. Fans are going to come away from this contest even hungrier for a playoff system that they have already been screaming for.
The Matchup
The title game is going to be LSU vs. Alabama. There is a very small chance that the Oklahoma State Cowboys can blowout Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game, but those odds are so remote that it is safe to toss them out the window.
There is also the possibility that Georgia upsets LSU in the SEC championship game, but that seems unlikely as well. And even if they do, LSU could very well still be selected for the Championship game.
So, for the sake of this article, let's assume it will be LSU vs. Alabama...again.
Disappointing Déjà vu
This championship is going to be an almost exact duplicate of the first meeting between these two teams. That resulted in a 9-6 slug-fest that LSU won in overtime.
While that game had drama, it offered little to the multitudes of fans that like to see a little offense. There were just 534 total yards in that game, and there is no reason to expect more from a rematch.
These two teams are great because their defenses are amazing.
LSU allows 2.64 yards per rush and Alabama allows 2.5 yards per rush.
That means the offenses are doomed in this matchup. Both of these teams rely on their rushing games to move the ball.
LSU is 18th in rushing offense and 100th in passing offense. Alabama is 15th in rushing offense and 74th in passing offense.
Neither team averaged more than 3.6 yards per carry in the first matchup, and neither was able to find sustained success on the ground. Without a run game, these offenses are doomed to failure.
Another low scoring contest is not something fans are going to be excited about seeing on college football's biggest stage. Check out the highlights, or lack thereof, from the first matchup.
Defense is a joy to watch, but it is always nice to have at least a few fireworks.
Conclusion
We are going to see a plethora of high scoring and exciting games. There will be at least one team like Oklahoma State, Stanford or Oregon that creates a ton of highlights and points as they dominate their way to a big win with their dynamic offense.
Then the title game will come around with big hits, but little else to offer in the way of highlights. Many fans will walk away disappointed with their heads filled with questions like "What if Stanford's offense played that defense?"
The only answer the BCS will provide is that LSU and Alabama have really good defenses and they are evenly matched.
In the meantime, there will be a plethora of questions about how they would match up with other teams. There will be an unfulfilled desire to see more games before a true champion is crowned. There will be a huge rumbling that is turned into an unmistakable roar for a playoff in college football.
