Tim Tebow: What Do the Denver QB and Brian Urlacher Have in Common?

Jesse ReedDec 3, 2011

Tim Tebow is executing a winning game plan for the Denver Broncos, but most people in the NFL community believe that the formula has a limited time frame for success. Most believe  Tebow's body will go the way of Michael Vick and break down under the rigors of the running game.

I'd like to offer a different perspective.

Does anyone ever decry Chicago Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher for hitting running backs 10 times a game and offensive linemen another 30?

Of course not. That is what the Bears pay Urlacher a lot of money to do.

So, how is what Tebow is doing for the Broncos any different than what Urlacher does for the Bears?

If you put the two men side by side and take careful stock of their physiques, you would notice that the two superstars look remarkably similar in the way their frames are put together and in their shoulder/back structure.

Although Tebow is one inch shorter and about 15 pounds lighter, he is also much younger and leaner than Urlacher. His frame is made to take punishment, but even more so his frame is made to dish it out.

Tebow mirrors Urlacher in another way, however, and this is the most important quality as it relates to Tebow's success: Tebow plays quarterback like a linebacker.

If you have had the pleasure of watching a Broncos game lately, you know that Tebow has a tendency to seek out opposing defenders, then attempts to run them over.

You also know that he succeeds most of the time.

Steve Young, Hall of Fame quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was the last quarterback I saw who played the game the way Tebow does. If he ever develops a solid passing game, he could be the most dangerous quarterback south of Aaron Rodgers.
