Al Montoya's Homecoming Spoiled as New York Islanders Drop to Chicago Blackhawks

Christopher BeniniDec 2, 2011

The New York Islanders first road winning streak since March was snapped with a 5-4 shootout loss to the Chicago Blackhawks Friday night.

Al Montoya is from Chicago and the Isles goaltender spent $3,800 on tickets for family and friends.

Montoya made 37 saves on 41 shots in front of his folks, but it wasn't enough. Despite allowing four goals, Kyle Okposo gave plenty of credit to the Islanders goaltender.

Despite allowing four goals in  regulation, Montoya was "outstanding" according to the forward. Okposo also credited Montoya for making several clutch saves late in the game, which ultimately allowed the game go to overtime.

Chicago Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews was the difference, potting the only goal in the shootout. Matt Moulson's final shootout attempt hit the left post, ending the game.

Still, there are a lot of good things to take from this game for the Isles.

The Islanders undoubtedly played their best third period of the season and according to play-by-play announcer Howie Rose, they played their best third period in the last five years. The Islanders outshot the Blackhawks 23-7 in the third period after firing off only two shots in the second.

In addition to the quality third period, the Islanders offense played one of its best games of the year. The Isles took advantage of Chicago's league worst penalty kill and went 2-for-5 on the power play.

Kyle Okposo, Matt Moulson, PA Parenteau and Nino Neiderreiter potted goals for the Islanders. The Islanders next play Saturday against the Dallas Stars in the Lone Star State.
