SEC Championship Game: Why LSU's Putting Together the Greatest Season in History

Randy ChambersDec 3, 2011

Whether you like the SEC or not you, can't deny that what the LSU Tigers are doing this year is nothing short of amazing. It's remarkable. And if it ends the way I think it will, it will be one of those things that you can tell everybody you were around to see it happen.

The Tigers are putting together the greatest season in college football history. That's a pretty bold statement considering the first college football game to take place in America happened in 1869. That's a lot of years, a lot of football and I'm sure a lot of terrific seasons by quite a few great teams.

You can argue that there are a lot of great seasons like the one the 1983 Nebraska team had. Or the 1986 Miami Hurricanes. Or even as recent as the 2005 USC Trojans. All of those were great teams and did some great things. They also had one thing in common, as they didn't win the national championship.

If the Tigers continue to run the table and finish the year undefeated with the SEC title and national championship, they will have the greatest season ever.

I'm not saying this is the greatest team ever, but what they've done is the most impressive.

Just think about how the season started when starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson was suspended indefinitely for getting involved in a bar fight. This happened just a week before the season opener against the highly ranked Oregon Ducks.

It was the biggest game of Week 1 and the loser was likely going to have their national championship hopes shattered before they began.

LSU went with a senior quarterback in Jarrett Lee who really didn't have senior-type experience and won 40-27 on a neutral field. They forced the Ducks into four turnovers and held an explosive backfield to just 95 rushing yards.

In Weeks 3 and 4, they went on the road and won back-to-back games in hostile environments against Mississippi State and West Virginia.  Both of those teams were ranked and they had to deal with the cow bells and the hostile fans in Mountaineer Stadium. No big deal; they won by 13 and 26 points.

They beat a ranked Florida Gators team by 30 points and a ranked Auburn team by 35.

They then had to deal with all the hype for two weeks that led up to the 'game of the century' against Alabama. They traveled to Tuscaloosa and beat the No. 2 team in the country in a defensive bloodbath in overtime.

Some people may say the victory wasn't that impressive, but the Tigers defense held Trent Richardson to just 89 yards rushing. It's the third lowest total this season and it's the only game this year he was held without a touchdown. Many teams are lucky to hold him to one or two.

Just last week, the Tigers took on a great offensive team in the No. 3 Arkansas Razorbacks and beat them by 24. They held Arkansas to only 254 total yards and an embarrassing 47 rushing yards.

They now take on a ranked Georgia team that has won 10 games in a row for the SEC Championship. LSU will then likely play Alabama again for the national championship.

So, let's recap. LSU goes undefeated. They end up beating nine ranked teams (counting Alabama twice) three of those games were on the road and another three were on neutral sites. Four of those victories would come against teams ranked inside the top five (once again, counting Alabama twice).

Despite the incidents with Jordan Jefferson, the suspension to wide receiver Russell Shepard, a new offensive coordinator in Greg Studrawa, injuries to key players like Josh Dworaczyk and suspensions to key players who tested positive for marijuana use, this team never folded under the pressure of the distractions.

They kept their minds focused on the task at hand, all while running the table through a brutal schedule without receiving a scratch.

Did I mention that only one of the victories all season long was by less than single-digits? That win was in overtime against Alabama. No other victory was by less than 13 points.

They did all of this while having one of the worst passing games in the country, as they rank 100th out of 120 teams. The majority of their success comes off of their running game and relying heavily on their defense.

You could argue that there have been better football teams and I'll agree with you right away. But if the LSU Tigers win two more games, there is no argument for a better season.
