Kevin Sumlin: Arizona State Would Be a Wise Destination for Houston Coach
Kevin Sumlin has been the head coach of the Houston Cougars since 2008, but after being offered a job with the Arizona State Sun Devils, it would be a smart decision for him to jump from the Conference USA to the Pac-12.
The Cougars are 12-0 and No. 6 in the BCS largely in part to the outstanding season Case Keenum is having. During his career, Sumlin has a 35-16 record, but Keenum has been his quarterback for the majority of those wins.
Doug Haller covers the Sun Devils for the Arizona Republic, and he was the first to break the news via Twitter.
That sparked a lot of talk on the social media site. It's a job Sumlin would regret turning down, as life without Keenum will be much different. We saw a glimpse of what Sumlin could do without him last year, and the Cougars ended the season at 5-7.
Keenum went down with a knee injury early in the year, and the Cougars were finished.
Sam Khan Jr. covers the Cougars for the Houston Chronicle, and he tweeted that Sumlin has not been contacted by anyone.
It's hard to believe coaches these days, so this is definitely a story to keep following. Remember just a week ago that Urban Meyer was denying he was headed to Ohio State, but look how that worked out.
Coaching for Arizona State, Sumlin would have a much easier time recruiting. Convincing kids to play in the Pac-12 at a school with a fun environment like Arizona State would make Sumlin's life so much simpler.
Had Houston been able to join the Big 12, then maybe he'd consider staying.
There's been talk of the Cougars joining the Big East, but coaching in the Pac-12 is a much better opportunity.
Dennis Erickson was fired a few days ago after the Sun Devils had a late-season collapse and missed out on representing the South Division in the inaugural Pac-12 championship game.
Houston was the first head coaching job for Sumlin, but making Arizona State his second job would be a great move.
The Sun Devils are taking a gamble, but they know they need to bring in offense to compete with the powerhouses in the conference. Sumlin and his system could work out right away with quarterback Brock Osweiler.
The 6'8", 240-pound quarterback threw for 3,641 yards and 24 touchdowns this season. With Sumlin, those numbers should increase, as the team would be airing it out much more.
Nothing is set in stone yet, probably because Sumlin might want to finish out the year with the Cougars since they appear to be headed to a BCS bowl.
However, his coaching career would progress much better if he were to move to Arizona State.
