Big 12 Insider: Week 14 in the Big 12
The final week in the Big 12 season has come upon us and with no championship game, the Big 12 season ends here. This coming weekend will see the much anticipated game against the Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowboys which could decide who ends up winning the Big 12. We will also see the Longhorns battle the Baylor Bears in what will be a big game for both teams.
Needless to say it’s going to be an exciting final week in the Big 12.
But before we get to next weeks games let’s take a look at the games that happened this past week and see how the teams of the Big 12 performed.
Texas needed a last moment field goal to beat the Aggies and they walked away with a 27-25 win. The Longhorns have managed to come back and win enough games to get into a bowl and have shown some improvement over last year but still have a lot of work to do especially at the quarterback position.
Oklahoma didn’t have too much of a problem defeating giant killer Iowa State this Saturday. They came away with a 26-6 win over the Cyclones and have set themselves up for a big game against the Cowboys this coming weekend.
Baylor and Texas Tech played one another and Baylor won big 66-42 in a game that didn’t feature too much defense. The Bears have set themselves up for a nice bowl if they can finish their season with a win and should remain ranked in the Top 25. The Red Raiders have had a disappointing season and this was their last game of the 2012 season.
The final game of the weekend ended up being a 24-10 win by the Missouri Tigers over the Kansas Jayhawks. The Jayhawks have had another poor season but hopes are high that they will eventually be able to get much better and become a contender in the conference.
Teams that are ranked in the AP Top 25 Poll this week include the Oklahoma State Cowboys at No. 3, the Oklahoma Sooners at No. 13, the Kansas State Wildcats at No. 16 and the Baylor Bears at No. 19.
In the Coaches' Poll, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are No. 5, the Oklahoma Sooners are No. 11, the Kansas State Wildcats are No. 15 and Baylor is 18th.
In the BCS rankings, Oklahoma State is No. 3, Oklahoma is No. 10, Kansas State is No. 11, Baylor is No. 17 and Texas is No. 22.
Let’s take a look at the only three games on the Big 12 schedule this weekend.
Texas and Baylor will take swings at each other this weekend in what promises to be one of the most exciting games in all of college football on Saturday. The Longhorns have a strong defense whereas the Bears have one of the best offenses in college football and have one of the premier players in Robert Griffin III. Something has to give. Will the Longhorns defense be able to take care of Griffin or will he have a field day against Texas?
In what might be the most anticipated game of the season, the Oklahoma Sooners and the Oklahoma State Cowboys will meet in a game that will decide who comes out on top in the Big 12 this year. If the Cowboys win, they will not only take the conference but will be in the running for a shot at the national title. If the Sooners take it they will win the conference and put themselves in position for a BCS bowl.
The final game of the weekend and the regular season will put the Iowa State Cyclones against the Kansas State Wildcats. The Cyclones have been known to play teams tough—remember that they beat Oklahoma State earlier in the year—and Kansas State must avoid the trap here against Iowa State. The Wildcats are playing solid football and are ranked close to the middle of most top 25 polls and wouldn’t want to drop down in the last week of the regular season.
