Coaching Hot Seat: Sources Say Mike Sherman Likely Done at Texas A&M
The coaching hot seat is getting even hotter for head coach Mike Sherman.
Many believed that he was a shoo-in to stay with the university, as Texas A&M school president R. Bowen Loftin said he was happy with Sherman as the head coach.
"As far as I'm concerned, yes, [Sherman will return in 2012]" Loftin told the Statesman. "We don't want to make any hasty moves, and we look forward to him being our football coach in the future."
Now rumors are floating around that Sherman is all but fired as the Texas A&M head coach—although none of these rumors have been confirmed yet by a credible source.
Sherman has yet to win a bowl game in three-plus seasons and has a mediocre 25-25 record. He is 15-18 against other Big 12 teams and 2-6 against their rivals Texas and Oklahoma.
This year really may have been the last straw, as the Aggies are 6-6 and will once again have to settle for a lousy non-BCS bowl. What makes it even more disappointing is that they opened the season as a preseason Top 10 team. They also had 18 returning starters from a team that finished 9-4 a year ago.
Five of those six losses have come when the Aggies had a lead at halftime.
After a horrible season this year and moving into the SEC conference next season, the Aggies have a real decision to make.
Do they stay with Sherman and hope he can turn things around, or do they hire a coach they're more comfortable with that they know can get the job done?
If the rumors are correct, it looks like Texas A&M is going with the latter.
