Bowl Projections: Alabama Win Will Wreak Havoc on BCS If Left out of Title Game

Wes ODonnellDec 1, 2011

The Alabama Crimson Tide already had their shot at the LSU Tigers this year. Billed as the "Game of the Century," the Tide lost a 9-6 defensive slugfest in overtime that only the true at heart could enjoy.

Naturally, the support for a rematch falls on both sides of the fence.

The BCS rankings currently favor Alabama over Oklahoma State. The Pokes have the opportunity to close that gap and leapfrog the Tide with a win over the Sooners in the Bedlam game on Saturday.

The computer currently rank the Pokes .200 behind the Tide and Sooners, who are 10th, and have a computer ranking .800 (the fifth highest behind LSU, Bama, Pokes and Stanford).

The Pokes, however, are No. 5 right now in the human polls.

There is certainly a damn strong case to make for the Oklahoma State Cowboys to play in the BCS National Championship Game should they knock off the Sooners.

However, if that is to happen, and Alabama dominates their opponent in another BCS game—which hasn't happened in all but one game this year—the question of whether or not Alabama deserved that title shot will not disappear.

If LSU dominates their opponent, things will get even worse.

Needless to say, the BCS has their work cut out for them.

So many different scenarios are still in play and the case for teams such as Stanford, Virginia Tech and Alabama gets very interesting once this final week plays out.

We know there are a ton of people who want to give another team "a shot" to play for the national championship, but this is the national championship we are talking about.

Punishing Alabama for happening to be in same division of the same conference as the best team in the nation isn't fair compared to the other bodies of work.

Stanford lost to Oregon again and plays in a weak Pac-12, anyway.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech can't be taken seriously coming out of the ACC.

I won't even acknowledge a potentially undefeated Houston team and that just leaves the Tide to duke it out with Oklahoma State (assuming they knock off Oklahoma).

Honestly, would you rather have the national championship decided between LSU and a team that lost to Iowa State this year? Or would you rather have it decided between LSU and an Alabama team that missed four field goals and lost to LSU in overtime?

That is not even a decision; it is a no-brainer.

If the Tide are swept into any other bowl game, it will wreak havoc on the BCS.
