Alabama vs. LSU Rematch: 5 Reasons Why Everyone Should Want This Game
The Alabama vs. LSU rematch is almost a guarantee, but trying to build a consensus on whether or not it should happen is like trying to get Congress to agree on something.
Unless Oklahoma State shuts out Oklahoma while hanging 70 points on them it doesn't look like the Cowboys will jump Alabama. It is the result of losses mattering more than wins. Just as the saying goes, "One aw-shucks wipes out a thousand attaboys."
Alabama suffered a nail-biter loss to the best team in the land, but Oklahoma State's aw-shucks was a doozy.
But this isn't about whether or not the game should happen. This is about why everyone should want it to happen.
The Rematch Would Give the Best Argument Yet for a Playoff System
1 of 5In the past the BCS has shown its flaws, especially in 2004 when Auburn, Oklahoma and USC were all undefeated. Three undefeated teams, all from AQ conferences and only two can play for the championship? Yea, that's a problem, but it wasn't enough to rid ourselves of the BCS.
Then you have guys like Boise State. It plays chumps all year, it's true, but it's a great team. If the Broncos played for a championship they very well might win it. But they never get that chance, because the BCS will never rank them in the top two at season's end.
It's a flaw all the little guys hate, but has it dismantled the BCS?
Now, we have the ultimate football conundrum. We have a team that did not win its conference, let alone its division, going to the national championship game. I and all the other 'Bama fans are happy as clams, but for every happy Bammer (something I've grown to love being called) there are hundreds of unhappy folks.
The SEC has dominated everyone in the national championship game for five years straight, but now the other conferences wont even get to play for it. In addition, both LSU and Alabama have won a championship in the past five years.
If you want a playoff rather than the BCS "dumb-puters," what better argument could you possibly have than the Alabama-LSU rematch?
The Game Would Actually Be a Competition
2 of 5The third competitor for the championship is Oklahoma State. But let's face it, Oklahoma State's defense is horrible. It is ranked 107th in the nation in total defense. LSU obliterated much stronger defenses.
It's not a bold prediction—it's a rational prediction. LSU would blow the doors off of Oklahoma State. If it didn't play out that way, it would be a surprise. Who wants to see a complete rout in the national championship?
Alabama is the only team that has proven it can hang with LSU. It is the only team in the nation that can not only put the Tigers to the ropes, but beat them as well.
If anyone thinks Oklahoma State could stop LSU, then look no further than the mighty Iowa State Cyclones.
This Would Be the First Time the BCS Championship Hosts the Clearest Top Two
3 of 5This is in contrast to the first slide, but in the history of the BCS there has never been a clearer picture of the two best teams in the nation.
Everyone but Houston and LSU have been exposed, and badly. The only weakness Alabama showed was in the kicking game. The Crimson Tide went blow for blow with LSU in a bloody 15-round match.
It is ironic that this rematch would really tarnish the credibility of the BCS because they are actually getting it right this time.
It Will Give Everyone More Reason to Hate Alabama, LSU, the SEC and Nick Saban
4 of 5It's simple really—fans love to hate other teams and conferences, and fans love to have their teams and conferences hated.
Alabama fans relish the hatred Auburn has for them, and vice versa. SEC fans hunger for hate from the Big 10, Pac-12 and everybody else in the nation.
This rematch would be a win-win for everyone. Everyone gets to hate the SEC more, and the SEC gets to be hated more.
What's not to love?
An SEC Team Would Finally Lose a National Championship Game
5 of 5Can you believe it? An SEC team will, at long last, lose in the national championship game! After all these years it will happen.
After five straight attempts by the nation to dethrone the SEC (with Oregon being the only one of the five to even come close) an SEC team will finally fall.
Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire, and it's clear the only thing that can beat the SEC is the SEC itself.
To fans of other conferences, try to look at the glass half-full: At least an SEC team will lose.
