Coaching Hot Seat: Texas A&M Won't Say It, but Mike Sherman's Job Isn't Safe
Texas A&M has to be thinking about a possible coach change after the brutal season they've had this year and the sub-par success they've experienced under head coach Mike Sherman.
Sherman was hired after making some solid improvements to the Houston Texas offense in 2007. There were hopes that he could help make the Aggies a respectable team and improve Dennis Franchione's up-and-down career at the university.
It hasn't happened.
Sherman has yet to win a bowl game in three-plus seasons and has a mediocre 25-25 record. He is 15-18 against other Big 12 teams and 2-6 against their rivals Texas and Oklahoma.
This year really may have been the last straw, as the Aggies are 6-6 and will once again have to settle for a lousy non-BCS bowl. What makes it even more disappointing is that they opened the season as a preseason Top 10 team. They also had 18 returning starters from a team that finished 9-4 a year ago.
It gets even better, as five of those six losses have come when the Aggies had a lead at halftime.
There is really no excuse for these performances with a talented and experienced team.
""As far as I'm concerned, yes," Texas A&M President R. Bowen said regarding Sherman's Loftin job security. "We don't want to make any hasty moves, and we look forward to him being our football coach in the future."
"
The future is exactly what the Aggies should be thinking about and preparing for. Texas A&M will not be in the Big 12 next season, as they have moved to the SEC. You have to make a great first impression on the best conference in college football.
If Sherman is your guy, you better be able to stick with him and not bail on him the first year he has another season like this one. It wouldn't look good searching for a new head coach during your second year in a new conference. Handle all of the dirty work now while you still can.
By the way, Sherman is 0-6 against SEC teams during his coaching career.
Sherman has the potential to be a good coach, but the Aggies are moving to a big boy conference now, where they will chew you up and spit you out. They better enter the SEC with a coach they absolutely believe in, or they are in trouble.
Mike Sherman's job isn't safe.
