Jim Boeheim: Longtime Syracuse Head Coach Not About to Quit

Zachary D. RymerNov 28, 2011

For defending longtime assistant coach Bernie Fine, who has been accused of child molestation by three men, many people want Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim to step down.

According to a report from ESPN.com, Boeheim plans on doing no such thing.

"He's not going to resign," said a source. "He's like [UConn basketball coach Jim] Calhoun—old warriors. He'll get through this."

As for what the university thinks of Boeheim's job security, ESPN.com said university spokesperson Kevin Quinn declined to comment.

Boeheim has come under fire for daring to defend Fine when news of the accusations against him first broke in mid-November. Former Orange ball boys Bobby Davis, now 39, and Mike Lang, now 45, both accused Fine of molesting them when they were boys. Boeheim's first instinct was to discredit both of them.

"I know this kid, but I never saw him in any rooms or anything," Boeheim said of Davis, per ESPN. "It is a bunch of a thousand lies that he has told. You don't think it is a little funny that his cousin (relative) is coming forward?"

Boeheim also accused Davis and Lang of going after Fine just so they could make some money.

In the days since Boeheim first spoke, the Fine case has seen a couple major developments come to light. ESPN aired a taped conversation from 2002 in which Fine's wife, Laurie, admitted to Davis that she had her own concerns about her husband. In addition, a third accuser has come forward, saying Fine abused him when he was a child.

In response to these developments, Syracuse fired Fine on Sunday. On Sunday night, Boeheim issued a statement (see Syracuse Orange's Facebook page) in which he lamented making statements that may have "been insensitive to victims of abuse."

Boeheim also insisted once again that he never witnessed any of the incidents that are alleged to have taken place.

If that is true, his only crime in all this is being too quick to come to Fine's defense. Clearly, he doesn't think he should have to pay for that with his job.
