WWE's 20 Craziest, Most Out-There Interviews and Promos Ever

Ryan DilbertNov 29, 2011

Maniacal laughing, rapid-fire rants and bizarre tangents can turn a ho-hum wrestling promo into an entertainment gem.  Crazy people fascinate us and the WWE has a long tradition of letting fans peek into the nuthouse.

The wrestlers on this list put our attention in a headlock from their first nutty word.

The Ultimate Warrior, Randy Savage and Roddy Piper feature prominently, as you might have guessed.

But who else has delivered the most insane examples of mic work so far?

20. R-Truth in Robert E. Lee Outfit

1 of 20

"I'm sorry to the soda that I wasted it all."

During the first part of this promo, R-Truth sang a Lil' Jimmy Song.  See it here.

Dressed like a confederate solider and making his usual goofy face, Truth didn't need to say much to make this an exercise in weirdness, but he did anyway.

Apologizing to a soda and discussing seceding from the WWE Universe proves he's the current King of Crazy.

The rest of this is too busy and crowded to be effective at all.

19. Flair and Razor

2 of 20

This promo for Survivor Series '92 starts out pretty normal, but if you skip to Ric Flair's portion (1:10) you’ll witness some classic Flair spazzing.

Most of his mic work is bursting with crazy energy.  This one is especially nuts because of how worked up he gets at the end.

Flopping in place like a Muppet, Flair looks as if he might start to have steam shooting out of his ears.

18. Macho Man-Tuesday in Texas

3 of 20

Randy Savage's promos and interviews usually had fans wondering if he was on coke or speed.  His husky voice rattled off Macho Madness time and time again.

This interview isn't atypical Savage.  Instead of his usual loopiness and bravado, he gushes with intense emotion.

Jake Roberts has just taken advantage of Miss Elizabeth and slapped her.  A straight-forward angry promo would have worked fine here, but Savage was never satisfied with fine.

This writhing performance is one of his best, but it's definitely weird.  The crazed look in his eye, the snorting and the fact that the majority of this interview is done on the floor makes this a no-brainer for this list.

17. Hogan’s Survivor Series Team

4 of 20

"Just in case we have to burn the whole jungle down."

Staying in the '80s, Hulk Hogan's Survivor Series allies mimic caged dogs for most of this interview.

With his veil-style headband in his eyes, Hogan dominates, not allowing Paul Orndorff, Don Muraco, Bam Bam Bigelow or Ken Patera to do much more than bounce behind him, laughing like maniacs.

There is an insane energy from start to finish, replacing emotion with sheer volume.

16. R-Truth–Why

5 of 20

"Stop whatting me!"

The wacky incarnation of R-Truth has been fun to watch.  Every chance he gets to hold a mic, he spews something bizarre.

In this interview, he covers hot dogs, spiders, soup and of course, Lil' Jimmy.

There aren't many wrestlers who could pull off reciting a recipe for spider soup, but R-Truth's more insane side handles it quite well.

For added fun, trying pausing the video in random spots and seeing how many kooky faces you can catch.

15. The Mountie, Repo Man, Nasty Boys

6 of 20

"This is going to be the biggest repossession in any WrestleMania farg farg arg harg!"

In an era full of cartoon-like characters, the WWE teamed the Repo Man with the Nasty Boys and the Mountie.

Promos are easier to write when they are composed of 82 percent crazy laughing.  This is almost as annoying as it is confusing.

When Repo Man talks about repossessing Big Boss Man and his pals, what exactly does that entail?  What does it mean to "nastasize" someone?

14. Dusty Rhodes-Handcuffs

7 of 20

"My hands have been full with that justice to be dealt out, if you will, in public, by the Boss Man."

Why WWE decided to put one of the all-time greats in one of the silliest outfits they could find is baffling.

He certainly didn't seem to mind.  In this promo and countless others, he exuded an infectious giddiness.

Rhodes shows off his dizzying energy and imprecise pronunciation.  He's one of the few men who say the word public without the letter 'b.'

Listen to 0:28 to 0:30 in the video and see if you can decipher any actual words.

13. Hulk Hogan-WrestleMania 6

8 of 20

"If you ride your Harley Davidson side by side with the devil."

The buildup to the Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan’s main event at WrestleMania VI brought the utmost weirdness out of the two men.

Hogan already had some odd promos under his belt, but perhaps Warrior inspired him to amplify the insanity inside him.

He dug down deep to find a demonic voice to work with and came up with a bizarre line about the devil's armpits.

This certainly made me want to see their match more, but probably less than it made me concerned for Hogan's mental health.

12. Dusty Rhodes-Dues Goin’ Be Paid

9 of 20

You may need subtitles for this Dusty Rhodes masterpiece.

While the majority of his best and wildest promos were done in NWA or other promotions, he did have a few nutty ones with WWE.

Just putting on that outfit makes Rhodes look crazy, not that he needs any help in that department.

Rhodes wobbled side to side for most of this, spouting nonsense, but the exclamation for this was Sapphire hopping in and saying something unintelligible in her cartoon mouse voice.

11. Snuka Loses It

10 of 20

"But steel like this, like you’re holding Vinny, has to take something like this and put it over this man's head."

An all-time freak out, Jimmy Snuka’s takes his anger toward Don Muraco out on his shirt and several folding chairs.

Before their famous cage match where Superfly jumped from off the top of the cage, he rambled on the mic with some animalistic anger.  Not sure what he was talking about, but his emotions are clear.

At the beginning, he doesn't say, "Take a look at this fart" does he?

10. Macho Man at His Best

11 of 20

"Reincarnation doesn't have to be."

Spinning in circles, Savage can’t stand still for more than a few seconds.

Talking about time distortion, forks in the roads and being a chameleon and bursting with energy, he seems like he's going to explode all over the camera lens at any moment .

The Macho Man's promos were equally enthralling and wacky.

Try having a drinking game and take a shot every time Savage says "yeah" and you are sure to be messed up afterwards.

9. Dude Love and Mankind and Cactus Jack

12 of 20

"The pinfalls in the hot dog stand."

Any one of Mick Foley's personas could cut a mighty insane promo, but combining all three takes that insanity to another level.

Dude Love provides the goofy humor, Mankind gives the promo creepiness and Cactus Jack comes in just to add one more dash of wackiness.

The audience is too stunned to react until the end.

8. Roddy Piper

13 of 20

"It's like Jacques Cousteau trying to find a dry spot in the ocean."

Precious few wrestlers past or present played the madman as well as Roddy Piper.

A lot of folks stick to shouting and tough guy lines, but Piper in this promo and many others mixed that up with high-pitched demented voices and what sounded like an angry dog yapping.

He was so routinely crazy that we may take a psychotic rant like this one for granted.

Piper ends this work of art with a strange reference to a wet dream.

7. Goldust

14 of 20

"But hark, who goes there?"

The entire Goldust concept was out there.

When I first heard that Dustin Rhodes was with WWE and wore a gold outfit, long golden wig and gold face paint, I didn't believe a word of it.

In this vignette, Goldust introduced himself to fans, raising eyebrows and dropping jaws around the country.  As he rubbed himself, he talked of lightsabers exploding and shining stars.

A bizarre promo from one of the most bizarre characters the WWE has ever seen.

6. Ultimate Warrior-WrestleMania 6

15 of 20

“I need not the normals!"

The Ultimate Warrior has produced so many crazy promos that he could fill this entire list.  For the sake of variety, I've only allowed him to occupy a handful of spots.

Warrior snarled with his back to the camera for the most part, his guttural voice straying from subject to subject.

Analyzing just what the Warrior is talking about may cause an aneurysm.  From injecting the minimum dosage to making sacrifices, he is all over the place.

5. Piper

16 of 20

"Your beautiful pectorals that look like you had six litters of puppies."

Saturated in emotion, Piper delivered one of his classic interviews.

Drool flying from his mouth, a soda dripping down the sides of his head, he went off on Adrian Adonis like only the Rowdy one can.  Piper insults everything about him, from his chest, stretch marks, to his outfits.

The perfect foil to the heroic Hogan, Piper channeled his madness into spectacularly insane promos again and again.  He made crazy cool.

4. Warrior and Savage, Ultimate Maniacs

17 of 20

"Do you see any door in which you can escape?"

Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior join forces to create one of the wackiest promos of all time.

Their blindingly colorful outfits alone might earn this consideration for this list.

You have your vintage Warrior snarling with his back to the camera and Savage's typical motor-mouthed delivery here, but together they elevate each other’s level of crazy.

Warrior outdoes Savage by speaking in a made up maniac accent.

3. Bloody Ric Flair

18 of 20

This begins like a regular promo.  For Flair, he is extremely calm.

But that blood leaking from out of the oversized bandage is a harbinger of weird things to come.  As his anger builds, the fans, as they should, expect some classic Flair yelling.

They get more than that from the Nature Boy.

At about 4:08 in the video, the insanity begins.

Flair tears off the bandage and pounds his head until he is wearing that trademark crimson mask.

Lawler, Coach nor the fans know how to react to seeing Flair's shirt collar become drenched in his own blood.

2. Mankind

19 of 20

"Sugar-coated testes, is that a new breakfast cereal?"

Mick Foley does demented at a high level.

In this promo that is supposed to be about Ken Shamrock, Foley as Mankind takes us instead inside his dark, twisted mind.

The subject matter ranges from training inside a museum with a spaceman to breaking a kid's toy guns.  Foley also goes off on the People's Elbow, calling it an abortion of all things.

Balancing creepy and funny extremely well, this performance stands out as one of the weirdest we've ever witnessed.

1. Ultimate Warrior-Nose Dive

20 of 20

"Smell it, warriors!"

Who else could earn the top spot?

The Warrior starts with stretching Hogan's name into a Gregorian chant and then whispers in between heavy breathing.

His voice travels from guttural to breathy, robotic to animalistic.

When he finally turns around, we see his face more twisted and unsettling than we ever have.

Warning: When you hear Warrior tell Hogan to crash his metaphorical plane in great detail, you may be intensely disturbed.
